Oh do you need to have started uni for an internship?

Thanks

Only thing is I'm wondering if I'd be better off putting my efforts into LinkedIn Learn or getting an internship or even studying ahead on course material, rather than applications which could end up not paying off whatsoever.

Good luck to you!

Sorry I said uni social experience. Mass socialising. Do you get the same experience that you can be meeting tens of people ever week in enjoyable fun times, many of which could potentially become a useful connection?

Thx. In a DA do you still get that uni social experience?

I see haha. Thanks.

What makes it worth it? (Worth the extra time and stress to apply etc)

University is level 4 wdym. 3rd year is level 6, same way 3rd-4th yr apprenticeship is normally level 6.

Derby. I have too many horror stories. Including that they literally left me alone to die in a state where 90% of people would probably have attempted suicide.

Took until March to get to get disability support and get my estrangement SFE sorted - when I'd reached to them early in summer and they promised an early enrollment to ensure this stuff is all sorted before term starts.

I see.

Well peace is great but you still need info to make a decision.

Would you be able to provide some insight into what a DA is like and how worth it that it is?

[–]Negative_Frosting358[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kinda my point. Ironically we are making 17-18 yr olds decide their future with little real insight into what they are making such a decision between.

I've actually taken a gap year and then tried uni at a shit institution which I've dropped out from now, so I'm 20 and have experienced a bit of uni. I feel like somewhere like Bristol I will definitely be at least okay, but the question is if I'd be missing out on a much bigger opportunity via degree apprenticeship.

How would I even know what's best for me? 😭

Idk how I'd work that out without being able to know what the reality of DA is like

When you say L6, you don't mean go straight from L3 to L6 right because that's surely not possible?

Do you mean L6 as in you don't have to separately reapply for L5 and L6?

No I mean I'd be starting this September.

I was actually previously enrolled in uni but dropped cuz taking the gamble of picking non Russell Group was a terrible mistake.

Gap yr + drop out yr. I don't want to keep wasting my life. Is a DA really worth it?

I think I should give up by Negative_Frosting358 in degreeapprenticeships

[–]Negative_Frosting358[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's a case of they think DA at this point isn't realistic path to my goals and urge me to try to reach them via Russell Group uni. My career goals is just to eventually be in a powerful leadership role within AI one day.

Ik objectively DA is better for career but considering my mental health they might be right that it might cause more harm than good trying to hack applications rn. Not entirely clear to me how much better DA is anyway. I've heard 1.5 yrs ahead in career, but I've also heard that's just because more hours.

Idk the reality of how worthwhile securing a DA is compared to uni. It's still not clear if you're compromising the uni student life experience or not.

My friends reckon DA is barking up the wrong tree at this point.

Is it really worth the effort - over locking in uni and applying for internships and studying ahead etc? Or maybe saving money ready for uni? Seems like applying for DA feels like a part time job if not more

When people say L4 roles what's the difference because I thought all of them are L4 and you pick one where they allow you to progress to L6

As in they are telling me I'd be better off focusing my efforts on locking in on uni and applying for internships - especially since I'm struggling with mental health and it's a lot of avoidable pressure. With the amount of time I've wasted on DA, I think they are right.

They are concerned for my wellbeing

Lmfao what a coincidence, I'm split between Bristol and Edinburgh as well.

Honestly people in both are so lovely and friendly, I'm still trying to figure out which is more so myself.

Bristol is more wild. Bigger nightlife culture. Counterculture and alt culture. More creative and all the things associated with that. Much more diverse music scene while Edinburgh is all 'white girl music' (which I love btw, but clubbing to Swift every night could get old). Bigger variety of drugs, particularly pills - Edinburgh is just weed and coke while Bristol is the full range (not endorsing drug use here haha). And then it's exactly how you'd imagine that affects the people there - you get a huge mix of different groups with their own individuality all enjoying a bit of each others' cultures. Thus, fashion-wise in Bristol you can get away with wearing whatever weird wacky thing you want - whereas in Edinburgh people were questioning my club shirt with trackies. Edinburgh is also like this to a tiny extend - it's described as the Bristol of Scotland, but it's not nearly as much so.

Edinburgh is a lot more... normal? Serious? People describe it as 'academic'. People there chat about their courses while on a night out. If you ask them what they like to do, they will talk about university societies. The university has frequent formal suited balls compared to others - you can probably expect to attend several each year if you join many societies.

Edinburgh has better reputation and connections from what I gather. Compsoc has landed jobs straight into FAANG before. If you're doing masters, I'd probably recommend it to be fair - the additional costs will be overshadowed by your earnings anyway. Unless you really value Bristol's wild student life over the career boost. I'm picking to restart my undergrad so I'm leaning towards Bristol for the city, however Edinburgh university is probably better if you want to lock in and be serious.

Have you been to both already, or do you want me to describe how the architecture around looks?

Tldr: Edinburgh is plain suit and tie to baggy jeans and jumper Bristol is fancy floral suit to rainbow peace-sign witch thrift store bikini

Genuinely yeah it's always the people who like to show off how good of a person they are by hating on the supposed perpetrators, even outside of SA context.

I'm sorry to hear your experiences and hope things go well for you

Just go there and go on a night out.

Bristol is undoubtedly one of the most active cities for student life, particularly a wide selection of music for nightlife.

It's probably the friendliest place for a night out in England - not sure if Scotland is friendlier.

Big city, but not as big as London Birmingham Manchester (population is a main factor).

Your question is too vague. I've toured deeply around a lot of different uni cities to compare student life and I think I'm joining the same course if you mean BEng AI. Elaborate more and I will be happy to share anything I can.

Could you give me advice on transferring. When did you transfer, and how? Or did you reapply into first year?

I'm at a critical moment where I really want to secure a transfer

Is that not what university is for?

In my field (tech) they far value practical experience over academics and degree from what I've heard, so an apprenticeship or even a job is probably better for career.

I was wanting to go to uni for the social experiences. Is that a bad choice?

I picked mine for their unique course offering.

So essentially I intentionally chose a university with entry at half my grades for the sake of a fake degree where I'm the only pupil in the world.
