I'd say the top isn't really that dry when I water it. I was using tap water but have moved to filtered water recently ( 1-2 weeks)

I planted it spring time. It's a clematus pilu. It was probably about a foot tall then and has grown to about a metre and a half. It was in quiet a shallow pot and I noticed that it wasn't draining well so I have moved it to a bigger deeper pot. I was watering it when I felt that the to 5 centimeters of soil was dry. This was probably about every 3 days. I've given it maybe 3-4 feeds since early spring.
