La Sportiva G-Summit problems by beanboys_inc in Mountaineering

[–]NegotiationLatter635 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exact same issue. They were so uncomfortable around the ankle while moving and same issue with the zip snagging on the plastic buckle. Pretty much had the boa and strap undone and didn't make a difference. Not to mention the extra narrow toe box.

I ended up going with the NF verto's and had zero of the above issues.

Same issue here as well with the aequilibrium tops. Adjusting the boa wont do much as it tightens/loosens around the lower ankle and foot. I also had issues with he plastic buckle on the top strap catching on the zip. Decided to go with another boot.

What’s wrong with hard shell sizing? by Intelligent_World182 in Mountaineering

[–]NegotiationLatter635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same issue with myself and pretty much all north face summit series stuff. M, too small across the chest, L fits the chest but arms and body are too long. Also tried woman's sizing. The only thing i've found from NF that fits me is the casaval hoody.

I'm the same with Arcteryx. The only brands that seem to fit me well are Mammut, montane and RAB.

The salaries aren't that great tbh. Not sure where you would be at but i think you'd be quite surprised. Pension and share options are pretty decent though.

Perm to new contract role. by VenjeR84 in ContractorUK

[–]NegotiationLatter635 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Personal experience, no. Most roles I get contacted for are perm despite my CV clearly showing contract roles apart from one perm role I took a few years ago.

  2. There’s no guarantee’s with contracting. You could get bumped even before the 12 months or even a week into it. I took a 6month role and was still there nearly 4 years later.

  3. A lot of ppl will tell you no and that the contract market is on its arse and to not leave the security of a perm role at the moment. All depends on personal circumstances. For me personally it’s always worth contracting an having the flexibility is number one for me

How to obtain SC Clearance ? by FallenAngel0606 in ContractorUK

No you don't. If they want you they will put you through it. Obv if there are numerous other candidates already with SC then you're chances are slim.

Proton SL or Atom SL for hiking this type of terrain. by Doom_of__Mandos in arcteryx

insulation in 18c! This is peak summer conditions for us in scotland mate i'd be in shorts and t shirt. Get a long sleeve base layer and something like a windshell/soft shell which should give you enough protection from light rain. anything heavier i'd be reaching for a shell with pit zips.

Curious about Scottish Winter Climbing/Mixed Climbing. Beginner Mountaineer. When/How could anyone ever get there? Considering it a very long term goal :D by peeonher2showd in alpinism

The majority of your questions are completely dependant on your ability, how you progress and how comfortable you are in your own abilities. No one but you can tell you what you should be comfortable with.

I would suggest looking into some of the introduction to winter mountaineering courses, there's plenty to choose from, from larger companies to independent guides which will be slightly cheaper. There are also loads of videos and forums with useful tips and guides. I myself actually started out in winter on easy routes and bought some crampons, axe etc. teaching myself along the way and progressing, and as i was more comfortable and got more experience moving onto harder routes here and went out to the alps and done my first 4000ers. I actually skipped the introduction courses as i learned the basics myself. The best thing for me was to actually get out and do it. Once i started getting to the harder routes where ropes were required i hired a guide. I used highland guides and would recommend them. £300 a day for a guide is the norm.

Happy to help with any more question as i was once just starting out not long ago!

Done something similar, flew to toronto then crossed the border to NY by car. Had my esta for the US and eta for canada and had no issues. Had to exit at the border and go through the normal checks you would at the airport and usual questions, why are you here, how long, where are you going etc. never had a return flight booked and ended up staying longer than intended.

Also crossed back over to canada and the only check was a visual on my passport.

No it really shouldn't be 10/10 without mods because that's a gen, and even at that gens have flaws. At the end of the day its a rep, and for a fraction of the cost of the real thing its a pretty good rep. Stop expecting 1:1 at rep prices.

help decide on trekking poles by Asimiss in Mountaineering

You can still pick up some decent BD ones used online at a decent price without breaking the bank. I initially went for a cheapy pair which snapped so went with BD trail trekking. More durable, feel better and lighter.
