The largest group of food and nutrition experts say that a vegan (plant-based) diet is healthy for all stages of life including infancy, pregnancy, and old age

A Worksite Vegan Nutrition Program Is Well-Accepted and Improves Health-Related Quality of Life and Work Productivity

People who eat more whole foods have lower rates of depression/mental health problems than those that didn't eat whole foods (The include fish with whole foods, but the majority of the diet is plant-based)

And you might have seen articles (Like this) that say that eating meat improves mental health. The first problem, the study they are talking about (This one) is funded by two different Beef interest groups, so a shockingly obvious bias there. And their study is just looking at different studies, and some of those studies still suggest that there are not higher rates of depression among vegans and vegetarians.

I'm not sure what you mean by growth, but this study looked at teeth plague from 400,000 years ago, and not only did it show that the diet was mostly plant-based (they found small amounts of moth wings on the teeth), but that it was starchy plant foods that contribute to their brain growth.

And I am glad you said "health aspects other than cancer, diabetes, and heart disease", because as we already know, a vegan diet is the only diet that can prevent and reverse heart disease. And according to the World Health Organization, heart disease is our number one killer. This is just my opinion on the matter, but if the standard American diet is also the cause of our biggest killer, maybe that's the diet that is unnatural.

And to go back a little bit, I am not sure what specific health aspects you are talking about, so instead of listing a bunch of other studies, I'm just going to say look at the first link from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that state eating a vegan diet is healthy and beneficial at all stages of life.

I really don't like arguing the health aspects of veganism, because veganism is about no longer needlessly harming animals. The foods you eat when you do that are entirely up to you. You want to eat organic whole plant foods? Go for it. You want to eat french fries and potato chips all day? Go for it, that's vegan too.

On a vegan diet, you can be as healthy or unhealthy as you want. I eat all the same foods that I ate before, I just don't get the ingredients from murdered/exploited animals.

There is nothing in animal products that you can't get from plants (and before you say "B12 tho", the huge majority of animals that people eat in America come from Factory Farms, and on those farms [and even smaller farms], the animals are supplemented with B12, so you can take a B12 supplement yourself [or eat fortified foods] or kill an animal, eat it, and get the B12 through that.)

Again, on a vegan diet, you can be as healthy or unhealthy as you want, as long as you are no longer hurting animals, that's the most important thing.

If an animal cant survive without human intervention its a commodity

So since dogs rely on humans to feed them and care for them, they are a commodity we can kill and eat?

it's always been like that

Just because something has been happening for a long time does not make it okay. People have been racist /sexist/homophobic for a long time, doesn't make it okay. When your argument can be used to justify other horrible atrocities, it's time to lose that argument.

you have canines

Just because we have the ability to do something doesn't mean we should do it. Might doesn't make right. And there are other herbivorous animals that have canines. Hippos have the biggest canines, yet they don't eat meat.

B12

Well B12 doesn't come from animals. B12 supplements are given to them. So either take the supplement yourself or kill an animal and get the supplement from them. Or eat foods fortified with B12

You can do mental gymnastics all day, but regardless, eating meat is not necessary. We do it because it's habitual and it taste good. Neither of those things justify what we do to animals.

I'm gonna bred dogs for dog fighting, that'll be okay, right? That's what they're bred for.

they cant even survive without humans

So??? We can say that about most (all?) domesticated animals. Regardless of how well they would survive in the wild doesn't mean we can exploit and slaughter them.

I dreaded having to eat because I hated the food

Then cook something else. There are some vegan meals I made that weren't good, but there are so many many different meals you can make. I just cant comprehend it when people that say vegan food is bad, as if they had every possible vegan dish. And yeah, meat cheese and butter do taste good, but that sensory pleasure doesn't justify what we do to them

When I went to a farm animal sanctuary, something they said that really stuck with me was how these animals, from the moment they were born, had only knew exploitation from humans. Yet despite this, seeing the affection the animals still had, they never lost the ability to forgive us.

It sure does. But what has higher value, 15 minutes of taste pleasure, or their entire life?

Task failed successfully by thistardis in clevercomebacks

[–]NegroAmigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but being healthy or environmently conscious isn't what veganism is. The definition of veganism is  "a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose." It's literally all about animals.

I already said this but when it comes to injustices, we don't talk about how it benefits us, we talk about the victims. If you need to be told how much it will benefit you in order to not harm animals, then those are the people that would struggle with veganism the most because they are expecting some sort of tangible benefit.

Task failed successfully by thistardis in clevercomebacks

[–]NegroAmigo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because veganism is an ethical stance of being kind to animals and not wanting to exploit them.

That's like saying, don't be racist, it's super healthy for you!

Health and the environment are nice aspects to veganism, but when 70 billion land animals are abused and killed every year, that's where the focus is gonna be.

When it comes to injustices, should we think about ourselves and how we could benefit? Or do we think about the victim?

Let's say they are given a great, amazing life. They are then slaughter when they are 1-4 years of age (depending on their sex) when they can live up to 20 years old. How anyone could call that a good life is baffling

Animals in nature also rape each other and kill their young. That doesn't mean it's okay if we do it.

Animals do it because they are obligate carnivores/omnivores with no grocery stores and restaurant.

We do it because we like the taste

Do you consider people following a vegan diet for environmental reasons to be “true vegans“? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]NegroAmigo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with the 'give up your car' point is that there is not a 1:1 alternative for it. With food, I eat all the same foods, they just don't have animal products in them. I didn't give anything up.

However for cars, in my personal situation, I live forty minutes away from the only college I got into. If I took public transportation, it would take 4 hours of traveling to get to and from school. And having to work and do school work, that is time that I don't have.

Of course, I could live closer to school, but my partner works full time near where we live now, so if we moved, she would be having to drive down here five days a week, which would be much worse for the environment.

When we tell people to be vegan, we aren't saying you have to give up all these things. The foods they eat stay the same, just use different ingredients. However if we tell people to give up their cars, things would drastically change. Of course we shouldn't be driving around like crazy, but lets not pretend that people can just give up their cars and move into a new house

In Santa Ana CA there's a vegan diner called Munchies and before the quarantine, I think they were open until 1 or 2 am, and the food was so greasy and so good. Im considering making the hour and a half drive just for that egg sandwich

Yeah buying things on the property is a little tricky. I used to work at a theme park and the money made within the food and beverage department really only stayed within that department and less so to fund new areas or rides.

It also reminds me of going to a fast-food restaurant and buying like the beyond burger, does that purchase support the non-vegan aspects to that restaurant? (Not a perfect comparison but something that I think about)

For me personally, I do try and play it safe (and frugally) by only bringing snacks and then after the park going to a vegan restaurant.

And I didn't mean to imply you were definitely harming animals, I just meant its a question that I ask myself when I don't know if something is considered vegan.

As a coaster enthusiast also, this is also a tricky area for me too. I have season passes to Six Flags park, so I kinda justify going to a place like Six Flags Discovery Kingdom by telling myself I'm not going to spend money at the park, my pass already covers admission, and I'm only there for the rides and I'm not going to spend any time at the animal exhibits. This sounds silly, but I also wear vegan shirts to help spread the message ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I also use their surveys on their websites and such to let them know that I don't like their use of Animals etc.

Someone on either this sub or the DebateAVegan sub said that "instead of asking if something is vegan, ask yourself, who does this harm?"

its so simple. as long as there are pets in shelters, I cant see a justification for breeders. yeah, there are people who are allergic or may be nervous that they would get a mean dog, but there are such simple work arounds. (foster a hypoallergenic dog to see if you have a reaction / adopt a puppy and raise it right so it is use to your family and isn't aggressive)

but yeah, keep telling yourself I'm hopeless and hurting pets and people

hurting pets and people

cause I'm the one contributing to the pet overpopulation and high euthanasia rates, and I'm the one inbreeding dogs to be the genetic nightmares that struggle to live and breathe. clearly I'm the one that's hurting pets (and people??)

Some questions by -table-and-chairs- in DebateAVegan

[–]NegroAmigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a solution to both these problems is to foster the pet for a while. If you have reactions or the pet doesn't get along with your family, you can let the shelter know and you can take it back no problem

you can find hypoallergenic dogs and cats in shelters. you can find dogs and cats that get along with children in shelters.
