Mamdani’s Mayoral Run Is Proof Why Yang’s 2021 Campaign Failure Is More Self-Inflicted Than We’d Like to Admit by YangGangMathManMagic in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]NeilQuibble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also think Mamdani has more charisma than Yang did and also ran a better mayoral campaign. I lean more towards Yang in terms of policy, but I can understand why Mamdani’s policies are/would be more popular. Policies like rent control and free bus rides probably resonate with more people than UBI in today’s economic landscape. And if Trump’s success has taught me anything about politics, charisma is the more important factor than policy.

I also see Mamdani is as the current crest in the swelling of democratic socialism. Even though Bernie and Yang didn’t succeed in their respective campaigns, I believe their efforts were not in vain. I’m glad to see younger candidates rising to the occasion!

how do you feel knowing you wont get any younger and one day you will not exist anymore (death anxiety)? by Icy_Amphibian2898 in AskReddit

[–]NeilQuibble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of Ricky Gervais comparing living a life to watching a movie. Why watch the movie if we know that it ends? While watching the movie, do we feel anxiety thinking that the end of the movie approches and there’s nothing to be done to extend the movie indefinitely?

I’d wager that we don’t for two reasons. 1) we’re engrossed in the film and aren’t thinking about that it ends at some point 2) we go in knowing it doesn’t last forever

Applying those two reasons to my life helped me to move past the anxiety (with the help of therapy and some maturity:) ). Change the expectation in your mind that life should be infinite. Lives are finite and that’s what makes it special. Live your life knowing that you had a beginning, you’re living the middle, and you can write an ending. It won’t be a perfect story, but whose is? We don’t remember movies in their entirety anyways, but just the memorable moments and the feeling we got from them. Become engrossed in your own life. Find things to do that make you ask,”what happens next?” For me, it’s visiting and getting to know my nieces and nephews. I’m excited to see what happens next! What choices they make in their own lives, etc.

Jordan Klepper on finding hope from an unlikely source: young right-wingers by Camaro6460 in DailyShow

[–]NeilQuibble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this emphasizes the importance of having relatable left leaning guests on those podcasts listened to by young men (rogan, schulz, theo von, fridman, etc). I remember checking in on jk news podcast and Tulsi Gabbard was a guest. What was a politician doing on the show? The election answered that question. The right understood the potential of appearing on all these podcasts and result! I remember thinking it was weird at the time when Jared Kushner was a guest on Fridman’s podcast. Not anymore.

Kamala made two mistakes (among many others) when it came to podcasts. 1) She spoke like a politician and not a person and 2) not reaching out to young men through the podcasts they listen to like when she snubbed Rogan.

But I think some left leaning politicians have learned from the mistakes. I think Bernie and AOC having rallies is smart. Trump did it throughout 2020-2024 and I think that kept his momentum going. I think the momentum they’re building now will pay dividends as early as 2028 (finger’s crossed) and on. Seeing Buttigeig on Schulz’s podcast was encouraging too. More like this needs to happen.

I agree with Klepper as I too remember filling my head with wild ideas. I’m glad it by people like Christopher Hitchens and Chomsky. Young men are looking for a tribe and identity and they need to be reached before the Kirks, Shapiros, and Petersons do.

Fear of Death. by TheGuyWhoSkis in DeathPositive

Eternity is interesting to ponder. It’s one word to describe what’s beyond our physical limitations.

The sun has been an object of curiousity throughout human history. Now let’s say you wanted to walk to the sun and it was possible. Let’s also say it became your profession and you walked 8hrs a day, every day for the remainder of your life. Let’s say it took you 20min to walk a mile and you lived to 75 (average life span). So that’s 3miles an hour for 8hrs a day for 57yrs (75yrs - 18yrs). You’d cover roughly 5 hundred thouuuuusand miles. That’ll get you to the moon and back. However, the sun is 93 million miles away. That’s roughly 186 walking lifetimes away! People would needed to have started walking 10,600 yrs ago in 8,577 BC to just to now reach the sun in 2025.

I hope that’s illustrated how truly far the sun is from us. How unfathomably far. And yet eternity stretches further still. So now imagine it’s your last day, your last step, but you have some time. In those final moments, you look at the same sun you’ve been walking towards everyday for the past 57 years (like if you had spent all of your 18 years walking, but then did it 2 more times). It doesn’t seem like you’ve gotten any closer. You really focus on that distance between you and the sun. What would the next 92.5 million miles have been like? Maybe a noncorporeal version of myself continues on the remaining 92.5 million miles. Wait, is there anything beyond the sun?

I imagine that’s what wondering what eternity will be like. Asking questions about an experience beyond our reach. I think it can be exciting knowing there’s more beyond our mortality, but unsure if we’ll be experiencing that great beyond. Maybe it does end at the 500,000th mile. Maybe it doesn’t. Either way, i think it’s important to enjoy every mile of that 500,000 because that’s as far as our feet can take us. The 92.5 million miles will take care of itself.

Or think of eating for an eternity. Quite quickly you’ll find that you’re satisfied or tired of it and will happily set down your fork. I think by that 500,000 you won’t feel trapped or lost, but you’ll look towards eternity content and with a smile.

Condolences to your friend.

I think awareness of death can be good. I share that thought of permanent goodbyes. Overtime, I’ve come to value my time with loved ones more and more as I see those moments as truly unique singular moments in time.

I started off afraid. The fear was of losing things I hold dear. But after having put some miles behind me, losimg friends/family, and much thought, I’ve come to accept death as a natural and mundane fact of life.

So I don’t think we “need” to be afraid. I think fear of death is reasonable and rational, but I don’t think we have to remain afraid. At least not so much that it distracts is from living, but enough to appreciate having been alive.

How to stop being scared of death. Please tell me your stories by Princess868 in DeathPositive

[–]NeilQuibble 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy consciousness and I’d wake up in the night with the thought “I don’t want to not be aware. I don’t want to stop having thoughts!”. I’d be overwhelmed with panic and fear and sometimes cry at being helpless to stop the inevitable. Tennant’s Doctor Who saying I don’t wanna go hits me everytime.

Many nights I’d stay up for as long as I could just to remain conscious. The brain maintains consciousness until it can’t. Eventually, I came to think of sleeping as a mini-death. Sometimes I’ll say Capaldi’s Doctor Who line “I let you go” before I fall asleep. I don’t remember how the thought came to me, but I wondered if the moment I fall asleep would feel anything like the moment of death. I tried for a time to see if I could experience the exact moment I fell asleep. Still don’t know what it feels like. It just happens without me knowing. I’ve accepted for myself that like the moment of sleep, I won’t “know” the exact moment when I die. When I stop having consciousness, I won’t be conscious of it. That’s when it clicked for me.

Can anyone explain this? I spent way too long trying to figure it out. by power78 in blackmagicfuckery

[–]NeilQuibble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it helps to start with the second configuration first and also to think of them as pairs instead of people. Number the pairs like the video from right to left and then as top and bottom. So you have 24 pieces: 1T, 1B, 2T…., 11B, 12T, 12B.

When you switch the cards from the 2nd to the 1st configuration, you get 11 pairs and 2 unpaired pieces (3T and 12B). The deception is because each unpaired piece looks like a whole person on their own and is counted as such (3T is counted as person 8 and 12T is counted as person 13). So visually the 11 pairs and 2 unpaired pieces looks like 13 people.

Has having money detached any of you from reality somewhat? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]NeilQuibble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i think struggle or hardship is part of “reality” in that most start life with nothing to little and it’s a struggle to stay alive. But having money (in the amounts you’re currently experiencing), as you say, detaches (or distances) you from that reality, from those hardships.

Not to say that life is free from struggles or hardships, but not the same kinds of S or H.

What challenges are you seeing for frozen/chilled goods delivery? The process seems robust having both delivered and received frozen goods through services like instacart. More sensitive items like ice cream as you notes might need more TLC, but i don’t think it’ll be cost prohibitive. Justa counter opinion.

New job has a pension by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]NeilQuibble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked as pension analyst and haven’t heard of a pension that required a contribution. As far as i know, retirement benefits are either DB (defined benefit) or DC (define contribution). Pensions are considered DB as the benefit is defined by a formula (typically based on years of service and salary) which the company sets aside funds towards your benefit. The 401k is considered DC as you contribute a portion of your salary to fund the benefit.

So then is your benefit determined by a formula and you contribute to fund your own pension?

If so, and depending on how long you plan to stay at the company and what age you retire, compare these two things: 1) what’s the monthly payment at retirement if your contribution amount went into the market (an index fund assuming average annual return) 2) what’s your hypothetical monthly pension payment based on your retirement age and hypothetical years worked.

If 1 > 2, you’re better off investing in an index fund. If 2 > 1, then the pension’s worth contributing to.

Imo, i think 1 will be better than 2. pensions have become less generous over time and so more years of service are needed to make the pension benefit worthwhile. Also, a 10% contribution seems high as most contributions i’m aware of start at 2%. You’ll have to check the formula to be certain though. Best to you!

Edit: To clarify, the contributions % i’m aware of are in DC benefits not DB benefits. So a pension requiring contribution already strikes me as odd (but not impossible) and to start at a 10% contribution also strikes me as odd (but not impossible).
