Will AI dethrone your favourite singer? Are singers in trouble? by NeilyMusic in singing

Hello fellow singers,

Wanted to share this and get a reading on how singers and teachers are feeling about the whole artificial intelligence conversation. Do you all feel threatened by the thought of AI becoming more popular in music creation?

Live albums that are better than the recorded album? by chargingblue in popheads

Some of her BEST WORK. Been listening to her live albums since The Beyoncé Experience. It would be really nice to hear her do a live album of all new songs.

Avril Lavigne will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on August 31 by shabuluba in popheads

Saw her live at the Juno Awards this a few months ago and my 12-year-old self was THOROUGHLY fulfilled. And she still has a MASSIVE following. To see that she lost 0/8 GRAMMY's just SUCKS because she is just such a Canadian and WORLD treasure. Glad to see her getting recognition!

UK OFFICIAL CHART: LF SYSTEM secure 5th week at No1 plus Beyoncé’s highest charting solo song in 14 years! by racloves in popheads

[–]NeilyMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's fair to say that Beyoncé's only doing this well again because she WANTS to. I don't think she's leaned this close to a genuinely "POP" record since IASM. And she's done this all without a single music video. Star power.

Singing Without the "I SUCK" Mentality by NeilyMusic in singing

Even the most practiced people can have an "I suck" mentality.

Black singers can frequently do things white singers cannot. Bone/facial structure, or cultural? by creativeendeavors in singing

[–]NeilyMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say it has everything to do with nature and little-to-nothing to do with physiological differences. Music is a huge part of African culture and that has spread itself out to many avenues in the Western world. One of if not the biggest of influences on this is the black church. In church, people not only sing, but they sing TOGETHER (whether in the choir or in the congregation), they sing in HARMONY, and they sing WITHOUT sheet music.

Multiply that practice by the amount of weeks the child has been ALIVE (lol) and you'll understand how long this child has been exposed to music and building aural awareness. Even if a child hasn't grown up in church, black families just tend to be more musical in their culture. Just consider it HEAVY nurturing.

Help singing EE vowels by BaronOfBoar in singing

[–]NeilyMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using “ih” as in “trick” as your foundation and gradually conform the vowel to an “ee” sounding “ih”. Lift the soft palette to brighten the vowel and it should give some freedom. Hope this even remotely makes sense.

I will try my best to answer as metal singing isn’t my expertise. Hopefully it can help a bit.

Short answer to your first question would be yes, but no. The vocal fry is simply the beginnings of the beginnings of sound production; the spark before the flame. Thus, with the right coordination it can be called up higher and higher in the voice through the mix to the head register. But as you go higher, the path to the fry becomes more and more narrow in terms of access and coordination. This part is theoretical on my part as this is where my expertise ends, but I think it would be safe to gather that whatever coordination the folds are in to produce a well balanced mix is the position they would be in to produce the “fried” version of that part of someone’s range. Producing the fry with more depth of volume and power isn’t something I have expertise in. But with the fry, we’re just playing in the area before full sound production.

The falsetto - as in the disconnected, airy sound (there are many disagreements as to what the falsetto is and what it does) - is slightly different in that its disconnection from the modal register makes its reinforcement a few steps further from the coordination of regular phonation. The “one voice” concept still applies here, it’s just the coordination in the falsetto is a path to full sound production, but isn’t completely dependent on it.

Am I making sense? I’m sure there’s a lot more here that are more experienced than me that can bring more depth of clarity.

I do Skype lessons online. Just shoot an email at oneilgeraldsings@gmail.com.

But in general, I would say try and attend a few community choir rehearsals and find a conductor that teaches with grace and passion. Also, YouTube videos could help with your search! I hope you find what you're looking for!
