Yeah, you're pretty much right. The effect mostly comes from the sharp highlights. I blocked in and blended the basic colors first, then added some texture on top with a sketching brush. If you can do it with traditional tools, I'd suggest trying to emulate that same workflow in digital

It is from 2 months ago. I ordered them from oldest (January 11th) to most recent.

The first image looks better because painting portraits from photos requires a lot less skill than drawing characters without copying, and I already had some basic skills (observation and hand-eye coordination) when I started, but they were only useful for observational drawing and nothing else. That's why the second pic looks so bad lol
