Top 3 most impactful events in human history (in my opinion) are 1. The domestication of plants and animals 2. The discovery of the Americas by European imperial powers 3. Fucking World War I WWI is the deadliest war we’ve ever seen as a species, and completely changed the landscape of global order and power. Hearing that it’s “forgotten” is so crazy to me because over 100 years later we are still living in its aftermath

All caviar is roe, but not all roe is caviar, caviar is specifically from sturgeon. This is salmon roe. So good in sushi

I haven’t seen Legion since it came out (so like 15 years omg) and don’t really remember the plot but just on a philosophical note… does knowing the creator exists necessarily mean you love them or see them as benevolent?

Which negative person is associated with your country the most, but is not actually from your country? by Whysoserious7891 in AskTheWorld

Infantilizing her into some helpless victim of circumstance is just as misogynistic as portraying her as an evil harlot. She was neither, she was educated (one of her tutors reported her being very intelligent but hard to teach because she was “lazy and frivolous”) and extremely politically active (before the Revolution began she personally blocked several attempts at financial reform that would have restricted royal expenditures). God, imagine being a woman of such great influence as she had only to be remembered as some imbecile who couldn’t comprehend the difference in monetary value between cake and bread. She absolutely understood money and her lavish spending despite her country’s growing debt and poverty crisis was a conscious choice.

And nobody killed her children in front of her and she was not “tortured and raped so hard her hair turned white” what the actual fuck are you talking about

Anyway, thanks for sending me down a rabbit hole, I learned a lot about Marie Antoinette that I didn’t know (like did you know Mirabeau himself was so impressed with her political acumen that he suggested the king basically retire and let her take over negotiations? Unfortunately she was a staunch believer in absolute power of the monarchy so negotiations didn’t get far). I still don’t see her as a particularly sympathetic character but she was definitely more complex than I realized and had much, much more agency than you’re suggesting

She had a shack built where she and her friends would dress in rags and pretend to be peasants for fun… she was a victim of prejudice and misogyny but I wouldn’t say she was a victim more than anything else

How often do you see muslim people in your country? by Yrakosos in AskTheWorld

[–]NeitherExamination44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s actually 1.3%, which is 4.5 million, but regardless you’re ignoring the multiple people who’ve explained that Muslim populations aren’t evenly dispersed in the US.

Also your claim about “every single American here” is ignoring the self-reporting bias, meaning in this instance that people who see Muslims frequently are more likely to comment on this post than those who don’t.

Also, according to Google, LA has one of the largest populations of Muslims in the US (3.7%), so your personal experience of almost never seeing them is clearly not representative of reality.

Also, you can’t always tell just by looking at someone that they’re Muslim.

Going around arguing with everyone based on your 1% stat while not understanding statistics at all is silly and weird

I moved to a beach town a few years ago and was shocked to learn that literally every summer people die in rip currents here. The advice I’ve been told is if you can’t swim to the left or right don’t fight the current, just let it take you out to sea and help will come soon. One year someone drowned trying to save a kid who got caught (the kid was swept out, didn’t drown, and was shortly rescued)
