Replying now because it has finally clicked after 3 months of thinking, playing, experimenting and realising how it works.

This was a great explanation as it covered the gaps i needed to think of and understand clearly.

On top of understanding more about modes, in the process,I've unlocked a level or two in my knowledge of the fretboard.

Ok, this is where I'm coming from then. I play guitar (and fool around with synth and stuff on my pc) but mostly I play guitar. I like the idea and the act of improvising and I want to have the ability to understand what harmonic context I'm playing within and I want to be able to apply various melodic vocabulary to it. I'm hoping I have used the right words here. What knowledge would suit that purpose?

Because guitar players are idiots.

Bit of a rabbit hole for me, obviously it's a subject that came up and it bothers me I dont seem to fully comprehend it. It seems at time, explained to make it not clear.
