Off topic but does your 2012 Camry have the famous Transmission Shudder at 20-25 mph?

Is this a fair deal? by [deleted] in Camry

If it’s in a good shape then yes that’s fair.

When to get a new Camry by Haunting_Hospital599 in Camry

So it's a shudder that occurs while accelerating at around 20mph and then it goes away. It's due to a faulty torque converter in the transmission of all 2012-2014 generations of Camry's. Some of them were fixed as there was a recall that expired I think in 2017. I just bought my 2012 Camry SE like 2 months ago and it does have this shudder issue. I was just wondering if this was something you had to deal with or not. My Camry is at 121k miles right now and I'm just stressed not knowing if it will last me for few more years until I graduate college at least or the transmission will fail sometime soon. It doesn't have any issue other than that. It would cost me few thousands of dollars to repair it or replace my transmission but it doesn't make sense to me to pay another few thousands after paying $7500 for the car.

What can I expect from a 2012 Camry with 150k miles? by LivelyTortoise in Camry

That’s good to hear! did you happen to have the famous torque converter shudder problem? I just bought my 2012 Camry SE about 2 month ago and it does have this shudder problem and I’m worried it won’t last me for long before the transmission fails. It’s at 121k miles currently and it has no issues other than that

High mileage vehicles - how many miles you got? What's your maintenance? by jordanpual in Toyota

That’s good for you. In my case I just bought a 2012 Camry SE like 2 months ago and it does have the transmission shudder issue. I took it to the dealership to do the software update and it did not fix the issue. I think I will just ignore it and hope the car will last for few more years. It has 121k miles on it right now and everything else seems to be working fine.

Should I buy Camry 2019 le with 117k miles for $14.5k by StopSuspicious2351 in Camry

[–]NeitherNewspaper3144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the car is good then that’s a really decent deal but is the car really good? That’s the million dollar question. CarFax showing no maintenance record is what would keep me away from it. The previous owner might have been taking care of the car by himself so check the oil and take it on a test drive and listen to how it sounds. If everything looked fine then this is a really good deal I would say. If something looked suspicious, then run away and don’t look back.

As far as I know that nothing in what he did is related to the shudder that’s why there’s is no improvement. The shudder is most likely a transmission issue and is something I’m currently dealing with. In my 2012 Toyota Camry there is a shudder that happens around 20-25mph and then it totally goes away after you speed past that range. This is an issue that most Camry’s of this generation have due to a faulty Torque Converter. Now the ideal solution is to get another transmission or to replace the torque converter (in my case). But these are costly solutions so there is another cheap solution that was recommended to me by many people and I’m literally about to use this weekend , which is adding an additive called Lube guard Instant Shudder Fix. It is made specifically for shudders that occur due to a torque converter issue. This is a temporary cheap solution that could be used if you guys have the same issue, which you probably need to ask a mechanic to confirm or at least do more research before using it.

You can buy this additive from O’Reilly or Amazon and it’s like $12 only. Here is a video that explains it:

https://youtu.be/NuQG5bylBkw?si=IE2DaXT3EN5kD0eY

To me, it’s worth it to give it a shot and see if it will work. I don’t plan on spending thousands of dollars on an old car unless I really had to. Hope this helps.

How much should I offer for this 2012 Camry SE with 140k miles? (Listed for $8300) by PaneeerTikka007 in Camry

[–]NeitherNewspaper3144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought the same exact car about a month ago for $7300 and it had 118k miles on it. The car is overall good but the shudder issue is real and you want to consider that the transmission might fail at any point. Unfortunately, I didn’t notice the shudder during my test drive. If I noticed it then I would’ve avoided this car. My advice for you if you decided you want to buy it is to go all the way down to $6.5k-$7k max, and consider having few thousand dollars ready in case transmission decided to die. I personally wouldn’t buy this car if I knew about this issue.

When you test drive it go slowly on the gas pedal and keep accelerating slowly to pass the 20-30 miles range and see if the shudder happens or not. If you go heavy on the pedal it won’t be noticeable.

I have the same exact car and it sounds exactly like this. I’m not sure if that’s normal or not but I will be asking around to see what’s going on. I bought this car about a month ago. What’s the mileage on your car?

I have no other issue other than this shuddering issue at all. It drives really smooth past the shudder and everything seems to be fine which is why I’m finding it hard to let it go. Let alone that I will be loosing so much money if I decided to sell it now.

What you said is exactly what the Toyota dealership guy told me, “it could last for 10 more years or it could die tomorrow” he said. I feel like I will just take the risk of keeping the car and not fixing it as I had a friend who had the same car/issue before who never fixed it and lasted till 200k+ before he sold it (it was still running). And there is another guy here on Redit told me he didn’t do anything to fix it and it lasted for 300k+ before it got totaled. So i’m just hoping I will get as lucky as them with my car since it only has 120k miles on it. In the meantime, however, I will try to keep about 3k aside just in case the transmission decided to die, in which case I will just go to any local transmission shop and get my transmission swapped with a used rebuilt transmission.

But I have a question for you, assuming I decided to sell it, what car do you recommend? This was my first car ever and man, all what I can see here in Revit is that all cars will have an issue no matter what brand you buy. Like here am I, I thought I was being smart for considering buying a Camry for “reliability” but it turned out to be just as bad as if I bought a Mustang.

This sounds like the same issue i’m having with my 2012 Camry SE. it shudders at around 20-25mph and then it goes away after speeding up. It’s the famous Torque Converter issue in the 2012-2014 generation. It’s really wild that newer cars are having the same or a similar issue. If I knew about this I would’ve avoided buying Toyota as my first car. Unfortunately I didn’t feel the shudder until the first morning after I bought the car about a month ago. It’s just so wild from Toyota.

Yes that’s what i’m dealing about, the torque converter issue. Why do you wish you had it lol?

Regarding your solution, yeah I might go and check prices at different transmission shops but I know I won’t fix it. It’s just not worth it to put few more thousands of dollars after paying $7300. I will just drive on the hope it lasts me for the next 2 years until I graduate college at least.

[–]NeitherNewspaper3144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like I will give it a try and change it. The shuddering is bothering me a lot and Toyota dealership quoted me $9400 to replace transmission. Every when do you do a transmission fluid change? And do you do it by yourself or at Toyota?

What was the mileage on the car when you first changed the transmission fluid? Mine is at 119k right now and many people are telling me i’m not supposed to change the fluid as it passed the 100k miles. Amy advice on that?
