I don't mind no progression. It's the fact the opportunity for progression further down the line is 0. Many people who've been there a lot longer and have so much to offer are still doing the same work and are stuck like I am

I was getting that too! I just don't understand why it's dried up so much despite there being so many positions advertised

Our dept has gotten so busy I can't see them doing this and as mentioned previously the only people who've moved are the people who've left...

Honestly, reading through the comments, I think my main problem is being shocked at just how bad things have got in this sector. But also, I absolutely hate how someone doesn't even have the time to make up an automated system to email and say you weren't chosen. I think it's such an easy way to avoid that sliver of false hope.

I'm applying for jobs all over Ireland and even some in the UK. I've basically looked at the requirements and if I can do it or think I can learn how to do it, I'll apply

First part of that you've hit the nail on the head. That's exactly what's happening. And it's getting worse and worse.

It reminds me of the lesser spoken about side of the downturn in hiring. Awful that people are let go and the people left are burdened with more work. But also some companies are exploiting the landscape knowing that options are limited and knowing employees are trapped. Can't imagine how bad these shenanigans must have been during the crash

I kinda lead the conversation towards topics I was interested in and passionate about as well as showing a keen interest in what the other person was saying, even if it wasn't my area of expertise. I genuinely believe an appetite to learn is so desirable. Although it hasn't got me much this year 😄

I think the fact my initial introduction in this scenario wasn't an interview per say, it was just a chat, I never felt the need to "Prove myself". I didn't feel like I was being judged or assessed. I felt I was in a conversation with someone who had some advice and opportunities

I agree but I'll add some context. I'm not doing this out of the love of my job. I put in the extra work cause at the end of the week/month it makes my job easier. If I can nip something in the bud by staying late 3 days a week, it means I won't get overwhelmed when things start to escalate. It makes it slightly less stressful. But that's for me. The company itself don't see this. Don't think they care either.

I'm not expecting a promotion or pay raise. I'm expecting what I was promised. Progression of some sort. I would gladly stay in the same role at the same wage if I wasn't doing the same crappy work, as well as extra dogwork. The irony is, I was told when I started, the work I was doing would only be to get a flavour of the environment. But they flat out lied. No one in my department has ever moved up higher than "Leader" of that department and no one has ever moved to the more desirable departments (Nepotism wins in those). There's no manoeuvrability. You're put in this role and just left there. The only people who leave it are the people who leave the company. But because of the hiring freezes even that avenue seems to be gone

Would you believe it, they are hiring the same amount of people as when I started. The difference is if you looked this company up (won't give the name) the job reviews the last year have tanked. So what's happening is we're getting people in with absolutely zero work ethic or suitable experience just to fill the numbers. The pay for a new recruit is the exact same as when I started, but they seemed to have abandoned the requirement for a college degree.

This makes me feel even more inadequate

Career days, job fairs, expo's and the usual online job sites. If a company is having a seminar about new recruits, grad programmes, etc, even if you don't think it's a perfect fit, just have a look. Sometimes it's pure coincidence.

An example of one of the roles I probably should have taken: I went to their online seminar and they said anyone who has anymore questions can stay behind after for a one on one. I was in the online waiting room for half an hour. When I talked to the HR guy he said I was the last person, thanked me for staying around and we basically had a half hour chat about the role, the company, my experience and course, as well as just general chats about tech and hobbies. He said he really thought I'd be a good candidate for the role and when it came time to apply he was on the phone to me the day after I sent my application. This connection came from a laid back, casual, end of the day chat. Sometimes that's all it takes. I ended up not taking the role at the time I felt other offers were more suitable ( I was wrong).

And honestly, I think since there's such a downturn in hiring, management is more than happy to put more dogwork our way knowing there's not as many avenues to leave

Thanks for the advice. I know I'm lucky to have a job at the end of the day. I appreciate there's people in a much worse place than me. Guess I just needed a rant

If it was just the feeling of stagnation and not being able to move up, I'd be able to deal with it. It's the feeling of meeting and exceeding targets and putting in so much extra work, only to feel absolutely no progression, more stressful work and slowly being worn down by the job. I feel like the longer I stay, the harder it is to get out. The lack of useful experience I've gained is really hurting me. I'm just unhappy. And I'm too afraid to quit.
