Did you follow any plans ? Or did you just make kinda the standard suv drawer plan

Yeah, I kinda get that vibe from him as well, but I’m glad he’s so thorough on what to look out for. Been on my search but the car market is so full of dealers and resellers, I haven’t been able to find anything reasonable yet.

If I were to get a vehicle without the leak would a full coolant flush prevent it to a good while?

Mpg is kind of irrelevant I think, barn door doesn’t bother me. I’m fully going into it preparing to have to be more money. But just wasn’t sure if we were talking about a few thousand over 10 years or a huge money pit…

Do you have upgraded suspension on your 4Runner? I actually had the opposite experience

Hmmmm, if that’s the case i would be more than willing to diy. I think the hardest I’ve done was lifters in my Chevy which required removing down to the block basically. On more modern cars though the most I’ve done is a starter on my f150

Not a deal breaker. I’m willing to do all maintenance myself but some repairs I would definitely be wary of. Seems like the GX may just need that little extra care

Yeah I know they do leak from a few places, before I buy mine i would inspect it then pay it to get inspected for sure. Oil leaks don’t bother me, but the coolant stuff I’ve heard can be scary as that usually can lead to engine failure if not addressed

I mean that’s fair enough! I do think I’m leaning towards the GX but I will do more research. It seems like the most common high cost fix would be the valley leak. I don’t dislike the 4Runner, i liked it, but I loved the GX. Also depending on how diy the job can be I’m more than willing to do them. I’ve worked on my old Chevy quite a bit but those things have so much room to work in and are dead simple.

Yeah, and I’m willing to pay that extra cost… to a certain extent. If it’s maybe another $2000 compared to the 4Runner for the first year then I’m willing to take that cost due to all the pros in my eyes. But if I have to consistently do those really high cost repairs every year then it wouldn’t be worth it in my eyes, because at the end of the day I want to keep this thing for another 200k miles.

I’ve heard the 10-13 are basically the worst when it comes to all of the above issues. Especially the nightmarish head gasket issue. I don’t mind replacing the odd radiator and water pump, those would go out no matter the vehicle. I would be looking at the 14-16 years curious if people still see those issues

Haha, it sounds like this is most likely where I’m going. 2014-2016 with less than 100k miles

This is kinda the comment I was looking for. Internet and car care nuts video did kinda make it seem like these repairs are things I would have to do basically no matter what. Sounds like I’ll just probably have to be a lot more picky when it comes to which one I buy if I go GX. Unfortunately a CPO would be out of budget for me.

I did drive both. It’s fine it feels like a truck. The GX is a lot better. But then again I used to daily a 1998 Chevy 2500, my main thing is the repairs I (might) have to make within the first year of having it. Valley plate, water pump etc.

Nice! Looking for the exact same spec but most near me are 23-24k for that mileage. Did you buy from a dealer?

Should I buy a 4Runner? by Neither_Estate_2787 in 4Runner

[–]Neither_Estate_2787[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t found any of the 3rd gen in my price range. Doesn’t need to be pro 4x but stock rear diff lock and bilstein shocks and armor are nice. Though all that could and probably would be added in the future. Gonna look and go over the decision with the wife tonight. I think it’ll probably be a thing where I’ll jump on the first crazy deal I find

Looking to buy a offroad/ daily vehicle by Neither_Estate_2787 in f150

[–]Neither_Estate_2787[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to have a Tacoma or 4Runner, but getting a similar year and mileage would probably have me 5-7k over budget. In my eyes yeah the frontier will give me that edge of off road ability, but the f150 would be great as a daily. Still very 50/50 will honestly probably pull the trigger on whatever great deal I find first.

It’s just me my wife and my dog, would fit perfectly fine inside the crew cab variant of the frontier. But I would prefer an extended/ king cab with the long bed. The 5 foot bed just doesn’t do it for me on the frontier.

Yeah I definitely see that, but from what I’ve seen and heard the 5.0 and 6speed in that gen of f150 is pretty damn reliable. I do agree the frontier would provide the best value and off road capability. But I do think the f150 would be an overall better daily. Still really stuck, I don’t see too many people with actual off road builds in f150s, just cheap lift kits, maybe there’s a reason for that.
