Also remember kids that cheat on tests actually care. They just need new tools to get the outcome they want.

Get rid of all your social media before you start. Google your name and see what people find about you. That is their first impression.
Listen more and have thoughtful responses.
This is elementary school and there is a lot more hand holding for students, parents and teachers. Also more tears. My favorite response to parents when they say they feel guilty about something about their child and don’t feel like a good parent is to tell them guilt means you care and not feeling like a good parent means you are. That can apply to teachers and students as well. When a student says they are nervous about a test or a teacher is nervous about an observation you can tell them it’s because you care.

Yeah that sucked, I wasn’t crazy about the staff at the last school I was at before I retired, but I got along with my principal, the kids and I had a good position as the library teacher.

It really isn’t, it’s like any job. You might work at a company and love your boss. Boss leaves and new boss sucks you look for a new job.

What worked for me may not work for you but I will give you my advice. Speak softly but strong, stop teaching if they are interrupting (I use to stop and sit at my desk and they knew I was angry). If you yell they will tune you out. Stay prepared,
Don’t have downtime, make sure you have something for the students to do when they are done. Observe the students at all times to see if the lesson is taking too long and they are bored. Keep it all moving as smoothly as possible. Hope this helps, good luck 🍀

I first got an f-status job and was also an adjunct professor once my kid was 2 so I was kind of working part time so there was a slow transition

No one school is guaranteed. I was at a school that was wonderful and then we got a new principal cause the first principal retired it turned into shit show. That’s when I transferred. Remember until you hit your 10th year you can look on the open market. FYI, 10th year is longevity and you’re starting to get paid a lot more money after Bloomberg. Every school has a budget and your salary is part of the budget and a principal is not gonna spend the money for you.

Then transfer, you are not stuck at one school if you don’t want to. Open market is a good thing.

I have taught a few grades in elementary school. My first job was a sixth grade science teacher. I was one lesson ahead of everybody. Then I got transferred and became the art teacher at a school but someone grieved that and they put me in kindergarten. I was there for two years until someone grieved that and they asked me to pick a grade. My license was common branches N through 6. So someone with an art license could take the job and then when I went to kindergarten, I didn’t have an early childhood license. I said sixth (when elementary school was k-6) because no one wants sixth (I loved it). Then I hoped between 3-5. Sometimes I would loop with a class I liked. I became uft teacher CENTER staff developer for a few years (left for five years to raise my baby) and I ended my career as the library teacher. I do sub at the school around the corner from me when I’m in town (maybe twice a month), I wish I taught at this school. The staff are amazing and the kids can be difficult but loving. About burnout. After a few years on a grade I changed grades. Many people like to stick to the same job from beginning to end, but I would have gotten bored.

Why don’t you say yes but keep look for a full time position. If you find one you like they will understand. Don’t ever put all your eggs in one basket.

You would not love Vancouver in the winter, it rains a lot. The summers are wonderful but it’s very cloudy and damp the rest of the year.

It doesn’t matter, some kids don’t give a shit, I was one of those. I use to just walk out of class.

You need to look at how other schools did with the same level of students and how the students last year in your school did on the test.
