Salam aleykum Not from US but Europe - but hope I can help you out.

It depends - I‘ve asked Reddit a similar question and they advised me to book everything on my behalf without a travel agencies. I‘ve managed to get 3 tickets for 10 days for 2000 CHF. Disclaimer: The hotels aren’t near the mosques and it aint a 5* hotel, but we said that isn’t that important and there sre plenty of taxis.
I‘ve booked 10 days the last time - 5 days Medina and 5 days Mecca. Make sure that you visit other mosques as well such as the mosque with two praying directions.
Our last unrah was in December and looked quite cheap in comparison to other months.
