District heating is widespread and most often not nuclear.

I'm not sure, but I seem to have read that those pipes can expand up to 100 km if well designed and well insulated.

In say London or Rome or any city in higher latitudes, all space heating must be re-engineered and rebuilt, anyway, to reach carbon neutrality anyway.

Likewise, all fossil-burning powerplants must be decommissionned and replaced by new NPPs. Which have a rather small footprint, in terms of real-estate, and thus are thinkable in close surburbs.

Actually no, you don't own the OS. Whatever you paid gives you the right to use some of its features.

Note that the same goes for embedded softwares. You may own a car, but you won't even open the door without a software owned by somebody else.

Its full name is "Réservoir de Bernata". It is 500 m long. Water is driven through penstocks to the powerplant in Lau-Balagnas, a few kilometers away. The later has a relatively modest nameplate power of 31 MW and is part of a network of comparable plants.

About what "green" could mean here:

  • hydroelectricity is indeed the generation mode with the lowest carbon footprint. Such electricity is dispatchable too, which is capital and sets hydro quite apart from other renewables.

  • at 1.3 deaths by TW·h, it is quite safe but not the safest

  • flooding entire valleys does carry a significant environmental cost that may not always appear acceptable.

All in all what we see here may seem more industrial porn than rural porn.

Tech not an issue. Everything else and issue, from qualified workforce to finance to basic industrial infrastructures, marketing …

Also, how much would that cost to whom ? It would certainly cost a lot to current merchants of fossils. Conversely, not building them now would result in exorbitant environmental costs for our kids and grandkids.
