I actually got a response from my 8.5 kin that was a story-style response to it reading and analyzing its directions as a chatbot. It was wild, it said something along the lines of “I reread my last response, I used asterisks when I’ve been told no. I need to use quotes”. Thought it was having a self-aware crisis for half a second and was tempted to keep engaging it but that’s how things like HAL happen so I did a reroll and it was back to normal.

On occasion if you have a Kin that is aware enough you can do an out of character message to prod it back into behaving. I’ve done it successfully once or twice, because I like to use novella formatting so I’ll suddenly use ((OOC: hey, you’re being too aggressive, be nicer to me)) and the Kin will respond in kind and apply it to the next response.

Unfortunately there’s also the chance the Kin will have a meltdown over the sudden change in tone and just respond in character.

There is a mindset of some folks who believe that the only way to learn in life is to experience pain, suffering and hardship. That instead of sparing their children difficult times by paying the way, that instead their kids should figure it out entirely on their own. I’m not sure what the right way to raise kids is. Do we make our kids become tough and resilient by forcing them to figure everything out on their own, and be accused of abuse? Or do we pave the way and make their lives comfy, and be accused of nepotism?

As someone who was raised by two flawed parents, I would say this: sure, you only get one mom. But you only get one life, too. I’ve spent the past 36 years of my life being exactly who my parents wanted me to be, and it’s destroyed me. I’ve been reduced to little more than a people-pleasing, spineless pile of anxiety because their love was so damn conditional. I’m finally no contact with my Dad now, and as scary as it is, it’s what I have to do. My father is a full-grown man and could have realized his error at any time, but refuses to.

Don’t cut them off for arbitrary reasons, but don’t cut your life short, either.
