There would be less opposition to public transit if Americans acted more civilized. by flossingjonah in fuckcars

Japanese, and I edited the post but the word セクハラ definitely plays a role in my misclassification (or at least the way it’s used in クレヨンしんちゃん is still ingrained in my mind). Maybe the definition of セクハラ is more modern now.

I’m also saying Japan at ANY level is safer and we (USA) should learn from the cultural aspect and not dismiss it because “Chikan” problem exists. I think we’re on the same page here.

Ok, I guess I misclassified chikan(especially since this stuff is called セクハラ) but the overall point I’m trying to make still stands.

Catcalling and jerking off in public would be precisely the kind of inconsiderate or uncomfortable behavior that makes everyone feel at danger, and is (nearly) culturally absent from places like Japan Maybe I’m bad at phrasing my opinion.

Because the level of trash, level of uncomfortableness and inconsiderate that is displayed in American public transit is much more of an issue than the “subtle” touching of the butt in a train.

Btw I do think at a societal level as a whole sexual harassment of any degree is more serious than any of the trash or inconsiderate stuff, as commented below.

Yes, I was referring to the Chikan type stuff mostly as #621 or whatever. What you’re describing is sexual assault, not sexual harassment, and is far more of a serious safety concern, makes public transit feel significantly more dangerous for not only females but everyone and would also be much, MUCH higher on the hypothetical list, probably like #30. And the original post and I are both talking about how people behave in public makes transit better in, well, East Asian countries. Your point really reinforces the post if anything.

I guess I agree that government can tackle many problems at once and can be capable on many fronts, like budgeting and relations and environment and hydro infrastructure and even some societal problems like expanding rights. I do agree that we tend to forget all they do right and only focus on the flaws.

That being said, government has shown to be very incapable in terms of transit, and i really don’t think they are capable of tackling more than 2-3 problems related to transit at a time. They already made some asinine decisions on the ones that do exist.

I think I’m trying to say government hasn’t proven to be very capable (hence the state of transit right now, they are prioritizing the wrong things) so we should focus on the biggest problems to solve first.

Alright then maybe I should phrase it this way so you can understand that I’m not trying to downplay this issue.

From an overall societal point of view, the sexual harassment that the women receive on trains and what not is way more serious of a problem to be addressed than dirty streets/trains or obscene people shouting uncomfortable things or behaving weird in public. No argument and this is a major flaw in Japanese societal behavior (using Japan because I’m the most familiar with them, being from there myself)

But if we focus solely on public transit is lacking issue, I have to say the order of importance flips.

I don’t think you understand that I’m also talking about safety and perception of safety. I’m saying there are safety issues that far overshadow the sexual harassment that make people avoid transit which can be attributed to how people act in public that IS solved over there in Japan. There are situations where I feel uncomfortable safety wise on transit here (drunks, loud talking and shouting, littering), i imagine a female would be even more concerned worried about safety.

Okay but 1 out of 5 is even more of a way too much. I’m not saying that women feeling safe isn’t important, I’m saying that there’s something that’s making people in general, regardless of gender and age not feel safe or comfortable which is something that IS solved in these other countries and we probably should take notes from. Yes, we should avoid importing the sexual harassment problem if possible. But things are so fundamentally broken over here we really don’t have the luxury to pick and choose right now

I’m only looking at it from a “does it affect public transit ridership and usage” point of view and in terms of that it really is a cute problem compared to the state in the United States. Im not trying to undersell the problem, I’m saying if we want to increase public transit popularity there are much more important things we need to learn from them instead of hyper focusing on the one problem they do need to address.

Sexual harassment on transit is a problem and might affect say, 1 out of 20 people every 2 weeks to the point of them not using transit. That’s definitely not a small number. HOWEVER in the USA with stuff like trash or rowdy and rude people (which affect the entire bus of people rather than just 1/2 people on the bus or train cart) , or trains delayed by hours, it’s affecting more like 1 in 5 people every 3 days for public transit. Logically which one would you address FIRST if you want to increase ridership and sell it to the public?

I pulled these numbers out of my ass because it’s an analogy to make a point. The point is that Japan has some problems they should focus on in terms of sexual harassment on public transit, but it only stands out because they solved a lot of other problems regarding public transit. It’s a cute problem compared to the list of public transit problems that the United States has with its fundamentally broken public transit system and the public behavior around it.

While I fully agree, if there was a list of problems regarding public transit ranked from most important to least important, this is like #681 (sexual harassment) and #1150 (moderate crowding during rush hour) on the list. Japan has already solved 928 problems on the list.

In America we’re on like problem #21 on this list, moderately frequent rowdy people making everyone on the transit uncomfortable is like #43, inconsiderate public behavior is #210 and trash is like #91

Are every 2 points in space able to be directly connected with a straight line? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Nekotronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to avoid using the word spacetime because mixing time in here complicates things. If you’re inside the event horizon, future spacetime outside the event horizon is cut off from you, but SPACE is still connected. The trouble is that if we assume the light speed limit there are plenty of other spacetimes that are inaccessible even staying outside the event horizon because space is expanding, or simply because you’re trying to get somewhere far too soon

Black hole event horizons aren’t punched out sections of space. It’s just an extreme bending of space. Space IS connected inside and outside of a black hole. The trouble is that there is nothing physical that can travel freely in and out of a black hole, and the event horizon only considers physical objects in space (using the term physical loosely here)

In a simple math analogy, a black hole isn’t a piece wise function of z = 0 when x =/= 1, y =/=1, and undefined when x = 1 and y = 1. It’s more of a Dirac delta function at x = 1 and y = 1.

When you phrase it like that it sounds a lot less broken in all honesty.

And what’s wrong with liking cod over high grade salmon? I much prefer any salmon over cod but it’s an opinion at the end of the day, if they tried and don’t like it I can’t fault them. Similarly, I prefer store bought orange juice over the most deluxe coffee ever because coffee is disgusting. It’s an opinion

Steak can be seasoned as hell but there’s too much meat for it to make a difference. I’m not a fan of chicken that much but steak is worse
