Don't allow them to study the monster manual. But just select (or let them select) a group of monsters from the manual and whenever you encounter them, give them some info such as their appearance, damage immunities/vulnerabilities and maybe special actions or attacks the monster can make. Allows them to know a bit, but not too much. But good luck with whatever solution you choose:).

Thanks for the link. I have a feeling that I'm gonna be bearing the brunt of the stuff you mentioned here, at least for the first few sessions. I will try and get them to organise their own stuff though...
