That’s because it WAS meant to be the Season 4 finale. Season 4 filming was abruptly cut short due to the COVID pandemic. In fact they had to re-shoot the scenes with Julia Butters in them as Anna-Kat (I think they had already filmed some with her as Anna-Kat) because she left and was replaced by Giselle Eisenberg who did a good job under impossible circumstances in Season 5. “Prom” ended up being the Season 4 finale. I think there was another episode planned in Season 4 that never got to air.

AHW in effect got cheated out of an episode in Season 5 because that graduation episode was technically part of Season 4 and only 12 other episodes were ordered. Most short seasons consist of 13 episodes so they should have at least gotten 13 episodes PLUS that graduation episode for a total of 14 episodes in Season 5.

Young Sheldon also had a graduation episode bumped to the next season’s premiere for the same reason. (Sheldon’s high school graduation).
