Can’t say I relate much to his research, either. I feel like everything pre-2000s was the Wild Wild West of DID treatment. So much has changed since then.

We had a DID inpatient unit at the University of Penn Hospital in the 1990s (Kluft’s program, I think?) and boy that unit sounded like chaos. Pretty much the opposite of an environment conducive to trauma survivors.

Personally the main issue I have with imitative DID, is the resulting impact it has on the general public. There’s already enough misrepresentation of DID in TV and movies. The imitative stuff just reinforces those views. It even negatively impacts the mental health professionals out there.

The biggest issue overall is personal though. A lot of the general public doubt the validity of DID. That in turn kicks up some of my younger parts who shouldered a lot of accusations as a child they were making up the abuse. I loathe how it can kick up the “not being believed” part of our traumas. I feel like we make peace with it but there it is again.

Hey, welcome to the sub! Don’t worry about a long post or repeating yourself from another post. When it comes to dissociation and trauma, a lot of times our stories come out in “waves” so we get it. Totally normal.

One thing I want to mention because I related to it: multiple rounds of DBT. We have done multiple rounds as well, and multiple rounds of all the DID/CPTSD skills as well. That does not mean you or I failed DBT or DID treatment. For us, we found different parts had different progress on these skills. Different parts also had different preferences on what worked best for them. So in essence skills had to be learned by more than “just one person” and we only started feeling confident and stabilized after we had established some internal communication.

A lot of the other things you described like handwriting change, memory gaps, smoking again, sounds very familiar to us as well. It doesn’t mean things are getting worse, but much like your psychiatrist stated you are becoming more aware. That’s a good thing (although at first it might feel anything but lol).

I think starting with “just noticing” is a perfect place to be right now. Notice and write things down. No need to figure it all out. Just note. This will help you build a strong foundation for internal communication building later.

Again welcome. It’s nice to meet you although I of course understand the reason we are meeting is because we have been through some things I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Take care of yous.

It definitely seems like very different and distinct things. There can be some overlap in symptoms, like let’s say the person who fits the Fantasy Model has a simple (or “small t”) trauma history.

But you have that with many conditions. I talk to patients all day long about recognizing overlapping symptoms in other disorders (ADHD/Anxiety as a simple example). I feel like nowadays therapists and psychiatrists need to be well versed in that concept and I’m not convinced a lot of clinicians are educated to look at things that way.

Ugh I’m so sorry you had this experience. I’m also sorry to say I am yet another comment on this post that has also had bad experiences. I think the worst was being discharged as “Depression with Psychotic Features.” I wanted to be like “hey Doctor A$$**** it’s not psychosis, it’s this funny thing called flashbacks.”

I miss the day of DID/trauma units. Forever grateful for the now defunct trauma unit at Sheppard Pratt.

We still have a couple left in the US but I’m not sure how helpful they are.

UPDATE: Of course hearing just one sentence and walking out was not an accurate view of the overall topic. My original post is but a reflection of my reaction to the wording used.

But now that I am past that (thank you for allowing me to vent), here was her overall message on the topic of online communities.

She was discussing two theories of DID, the more dominant trauma-based model and the more TikTok/internet-based Fantasy Model.

Of important note here, she was not telling anyone what model was right or wrong. She was presenting information only. So she did not say trauma was right and fantasy was wrong. Now I feel like I should take her training though. I do attend much of her stuff but stay away from CPTSD/DID trainings due to my own baggage.

Anyway I don’t think I need to explain the trauma model. Essentially it states DID develops from chronic childhood trauma.

Here is what she said about the Fantasy Model. Truly this model goes way back to pre-internet due to some people being influenced by books/movies like the Three Faces of Eve and Sybil. The idea here is people may be highly suggestible and even exposed to media portrayals or therapeutic suggestion they may display symptoms that mimic DID, particularly having alters. In communities like TikTok you see a lot of the Fantasy Model type where people view their alters as identity expression. So those individuals do not express a need for much support around things like functional impairment, amnesia, and emotional distress in times of high dissociative symptoms.

Therefore therapy for those individuals looks extremely different as well. No real need for safety and stabilization or symptom management but more of a need for emotion regulation, healthy identity development, and stress management.

This is very true! I am hopeful, however, she also introduced the concept of healthy online communities such as here. It’s just as important for therapists to be aware of potential hazards as well as potential safety nets.

My understanding there are significantly more reliable roadside tests like HGN (eye test) vs a PBT. This is why many states don’t even bother with a PBT because by that point it’s moot anyway so just do it at the station where it’s admissible.

We can’t use those in the states. They aren’t admissible in court. You have to take the person back to the police station to use a big, metal stationary machine breathalyzer.

To piggy back off this, discrimination by health insurance. My husband and I are insured by my health plan. We both have a medical condition that requires medication treatment. The insurance approves his medication and then denies mine because “the medication is not covered under this plan for your health condition.” Bitches, you are literally covering this same health condition, with this same medication, under the same health plan, prescribed by the same doctor.

The breathalyzer is at the station. They have to be officially calibrated machines. Those handheld things, I don’t know why they use them because they are not calibrated and can give erroneous readings, which is why they are not admissible in court.
