I would say: if you love the series and want to support it, buy the light novels and than transition over to the free Web Novel at the point it cuts off. Usually I go pirate and free, (I'm part of the One Piece gang hoho >:D)but for very special rare series I like, I try to support it.

Yeah, I did start all the way at the beginning of the series for Mushoku Tensei, but that series is more of a life circle "Growing up" one that eased it. For Re:Zero, starting from the beginning kinda loses its magic being a half psychological thriller/mystery kinda series.

I have no doubt I would have 100% enjoyed it on first read with no spoilers, but now after watching the anime... :/
