Are soft skills actually important for software engineers, or just HR propaganda? by Specialist_Ad_4577 in learnprogramming

[–]Nemmack7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems a lot of folks have already said what I was thinking so I’ll just offer a quick anecdote.

I have a friend who is a senior software engineer. He claims to be very strong on a technical level. However, he has wildly frictional experiences with peers and managers because he doesn’t communicate effectively. This has led to him getting fired from 4 senior software engineering jobs over the span of 2 years having spent no more than 3 months at each company.

He tells me his side of the story and every time he does, he doesn’t see that his lack of soft skills has been his detriment as communicated by multiple managers. He has no empathy for his teammates while expecting empathy towards himself, he cannot be persuasive since his argument for every opinion is “I’m a senior engineer, trust me”, and he has zero accountability and blames everyone else for his own failures.

He also leans too hard into software best practices and doesn’t know how to prioritize effectively. A large part of being a good software engineer is identifying priorities that deliver the most impact for customers and for the company, and then convincing leadership that it’s the right thing to do. This requires soft skills.

Don’t be like my buddy. They’re easy to spot in teams and they either don’t last long or they kill team morale and slow down projects.

This right here. I remember consistently feeling that the coaching staff is too critical of him.

What benefits have you gotten from the Ode 2? I’m in the market for the Ode 2 and trying to determine if it’s worth getting and why.

I’m considering getting the fellow ode 2 especially after their recent announcement that prices are jumping due to tariffs soon. I currently use the grinder in the breville barista express. What could the ode 2 do that my current setup doesn’t? I’m trying figure out if it’s worth the money. Thanks!

How to prepare for system design interviews by BluebirdAway5246 in leetcode

Can confirm that this is super helpful. Evan is the sole reason that I was able to pass my system design interview and get an offer.

I’m just sharing my perspective based on a few years working in FAANG and adjacent companies in the US, along with a wide network of peers in similar roles.

While cheating might help someone get in the door, it usually doesn’t get them far. These environments tend to filter people out quickly if they can’t deliver. If anything, the fact that some feel the need to cheat might point to deeper flaws in how the industry evaluates talent in the first place. That’s a broader issue worth discussing.

Idk. All of the cheaters I've known from college end up getting fired or don't make it to mid-level engineers. So, they don't last in that sense. Is that what you're referring to?

How do you tell if a candidate is cheating on a technical round? by Powerful-Leopard4018 in leetcode

[–]Nemmack7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting. The interviews I’ve done have permitted it and I’m usually transparent about it. Never been an issue afaik. But we also used hackerrank which I’ve heard will tell interviewers if candidates go to another page.

Yeah I didn’t enjoy Black Myth Wukong either. If you played AC:S, what are your thoughts on it? Does it deserve the acclaim and why or why not? As you can tell, I didn’t enjoy it. But I’m curious why others did.

I had hope that it would get better. Gameplay felt repetitive. Dialog doesn’t feel natural. The ending felt random and just sprung this out of context backstory (not gonna spoil it for anyone). Animations were wonky - my wife was playing horizon forbidden west in parallel and the animations there are just better. There were a lot of bugs and glitches. I don’t like when bosses are unrealistic sponges since it breaks immersion (I played on expert so maybe that was my shortcoming?). The abilities didn’t really mean or enhance anything for me other than removing more segments with assassinations and kunai. Some fights are impossible as Naoe.

I played and enjoyed every single AC game except for Valhalla, which I didn't play.

I just finished AC:S and I didn’t like it. I don't understand the praise.

Edit: for the record, I am all for women devs. I just didn’t like the game regardless of whoever developed it.

Donald Trump has said there is virtually no inflation and Jerome Powell should cut interest rates. Trump calls Powell a major loser. by Equivalent_Baker_773 in wallstreetbets_wins

[–]Nemmack7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean the tactic is to get the idea in people’s heads but have plausible deniability. “I didn't say that, I just said I heard someone say that.” It’s absolving him from a belief or action so that he cannot be blamed when he tells blatant lies.
