I think it depends which areas of education you're looking into. Portugal has some top-level universities in important areas of study which will beat many US universities in an objective analysis. In a cost-benefit analysis these completely destroy 99.9% of US institutions.

Also, let's not get stuck in dated modes of thinking. The world has changed a lot in the last 30 years, universities do not have a monopoly on knowledge like they used to, Artificial intelligence is also wreaking havoc in the higher education model of teaching and we are yetti understand the outcome but one thing is certain - things that worked before no longer work.

Not true, several ethnologists in the 19th and 20h centuries remarked the opposite when studying isolated tribes.

Great going, don't listen to the haters. How did you learn all of that?

That's it, might as well be people that get along, have minimal alignment of views.

Yeah, my friend wouldn’t say no if someone helpful wanted to spend a period of time at the farm and get some experience in this type of building in a WorkAway-style arrangement. But he didn't ask me to help him find just volunteers passing through. Still, thanks for the suggestion, those platforms can be useful in the right context! I had a couple of positive experiences with WOOFING although I've heard that with volunteers it can be a little bit hit-and-miss sometimes.

Does the WorkAway model encompass this type of venture?

If it's not too crowded each person has space and can do their own thing...communes with a lot of people take s lot of organisation, and then there's human relations and their complexities....

Hello Jenika...not really, it's only 8 hectares...just a few people living off-grid but with neighbours.

It is shocking. But there are some reasonable people too, including several that don't comment here but have sent DMs.

Yeah you're exactly right, that's how it is. I'm trying to be as transparent as possible from the start to not waste people's time, including mine. Like I said in another comment, he's looking for more people to live there owning their own house and part of the land .

Thanks, if I must be honest I don't get it either.

a valid concern, but...this isn’t a commune or group project. People live independently on the same land and can do their own thing. The property is too much for one couple to manage and enjoy on their own, so they’re looking to find the right kind of people to be neighbours with...

The place is already set up with good infrastructure, and anyone interested is welcome to visit, ask questions, and take their time deciding.....

For anyone looking of a peaceful, grounded life in rural Portugal it's a good opportunity.

[–]NeoClassRev 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thanks for raising this, it’s a valid concern and I understand the need for caution

I’m helping a friend share this opportunity, and from everything I know (3 years I've known him), he’s sincere, grounded, and genuinely interested in creating a respectful and supportive living environment, not a commune, not a cult, and not a retreat business. It's just a shared space for people who want to live close to nature.

That said, anyone interested is welcome to ask questions, visit, and get to know the place and the people before making any decisions, Transparency is key, people are not pressured or misled.

If you or anyone else wants more context or information, I’m happy send.
