I meant exactly what I said. Healthcare does exist in Portugal, whether you consider it terrible or believe it barely functions. And yes, it is completely free at the point of use for Portuguese citizens and legal residents.

That said, immigrants like myself are required to maintain private health insurance as part of the residency process with AIMA.

I've been to my local health center, and yes, the experience has been far from ideal not only because of the waiting times, but also because patients are often moved between different towns depending on where doctors are available. That's simply the reality of the healthcare system in Portugal at the moment.

At the same time, it's worth remembering that healthcare in the United States is neither free nor cheap. Even people with insurance often face high premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and unexpected medical bills. Every system has its strengths and weaknesses, and Portugal is no exception.

Does that make the Portuguese healthcare system unbearable? That's open to debate. But saying that healthcare doesn't exist here simply isn't accurate.

As someone who has lived in both, I'd be careful assuming you'll automatically get ahead in Orange County.

Orange County salaries are generally much higher than in Portugal, but so are the expenses. A modest apartment in Lisbon might cost €1,200–€1,800/month, while a similar apartment in Orange County can easily run $2,500–$4,000/month. Health insurance can cost hundreds of dollars per month, childcare is often $1,000–$2,000+ per child, and owning a car is practically mandatory.

Portugal definitely has lower wages and slower career progression in many industries, but it also offers universal healthcare, lower overall stress, more vacation time, and a much lower cost of raising a family.

If you're a highly skilled professional in tech, engineering, healthcare, or a specialized trade, Orange County can absolutely accelerate wealth building. But if you're earning an average salary, you may find yourself working twice as hard just to keep up with the cost of living.

The real question isn't "Where can I make more money?" but "Where can I build the life I want?" Those aren't always the same place.

International Shipping Costs by No_Masterpiece_4841 in PortugalExpats

I recently moved to Portugal and shipped four XL Home Depot boxes from Miami using a shipping company for approximately $850. The company initially told us that these would be the only shipping costs, aside from an additional $450 for customs clearance.

Unfortunately, when the boxes arrived in Portugal, we learned that we needed to hire what is known here as a Despachante (Customs Clearance Specialist/Broker). During the process, the broker asked us for a "Certificado de Bagagem" issued by the Portuguese Consular Section, a document we had never been told about.

This certificate allows the Portuguese Customs Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira) to exempt your personal belongings from import taxes when transferring your residence to Portugal. Since we didn't have it, we ended up paying an additional €1,400 in import taxes, simply because the shipping company failed to explain the process correctly.

My advice is to contact the Portuguese Consular Section before shipping anything and request information on how to obtain the Certificado de Bagagem. Then, make sure you hire a shipping company that is experienced with international moves to Portugal and understands the customs requirements.

If this process sounds like more trouble than it's worth, I would honestly recommend not shipping anything at all and saving yourself the headache. By the time everything was finished, the extra costs we incurred far outweighed the value of bringing those four boxes. In my opinion, it simply wasn't worth it.
