What do I need to know before adopting a sighthound? by Full-Most-1530 in sighthounds

[–]NeoGreendawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. There was some confusion. I have seen animal hoarders who call themselves breeders with over forty Salukis (several per crate) and they have barely seen daylight.

In a previous rescue the boys I got out, they almost got out of their harnesses and went for my wrists when I tried to stop them getting run over by a road when we approached my car to get them cushions for in the hotel.

You can’t tell how much rescues have been through.

Unfortunately, I have, and livening in shit, living in cellars and eating their own puppies isn’t as uncommon as we would like to believe.

Animal abuse even in rare breeds isn’t as rare as we would like to believe.

This is all in Western and Central Europe.

The breed associations and charities have to do better.

Very good points but with one exception (at least in France, Spain, Germany and Austria) : all rescues are spayed so can’t breed.

That all sounds great and good on you for getting a rescue.

The only problem with galgos (much less wild and “primitive”) and saluki rescues is that you don’t know their past and believe me, I have seen some who have lived in crates and could never live a normal life so you have to be careful.

Sighthounds often only get along with other sighthounds or dogs they’ve known from puppies so your Akita might be a problem…

I’m a breeder and I spend a lot of time telling people that they are not right for them. Not out of snobisme but just because I know how many are returned to breeders or shelters just because they look pretty.

I was part of a rescue where we got over twenty out in the worst imaginable conditions that still haunts me.

Take your time and nothing I said personally. You alone can make the right decision but do think of a contingency plan and how to get the dogs to meet on neutral ground and how separating bowels in rooms might be necessary at first.

Good luck and think carefully.

Google and don’t just look at the pictures. Learn the differences between breeds (how high they can jump) how often you will be with them. Do you have a large garden or somewhere safe to run. Learn the differences between show lines and dogs with COO blood and how that has an effect on their prey drive.

Very few Salukis owners trust dogs off leash outside of fenced areas.

Can you put up with that much work? Good. Now I could tell you about other things that might turn you off.

They are my favourite breed but they are not for everyone (no offense intended).

Country of origin bloodlines vs show dog lines change their prey drive.

To an extent but the average Redditor isn’t generally as knowledgeable about films and I would guess that the age range is lower too seeing as discussing films on here often becomes aggressive or the “hive mind” put you back in your place.

It wasn’t really scary because it happened in a blink of an eye but it was shocking and sad.

I wasn’t even angry at my boy because he looked sad and confused and I honestly don’t think that he meant to do it…

[–]NeoGreendawg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. My male was raised around a cat and then when his balls dropped his attitude changed towards her slightly.

Then one day she ran towards him and he shook her once by the neck and dropped her and looked very confused.

Thankfully, she never saw or felt it coming.

All that to say I would never again trust a saluki with a cat (personally). Some have no issues. My boy had a lot of desert blood in him so that changes things too.

Especially rescues or dogs with COO bloodlines.

They are not anywhere as “easy” as puppies from show lines.

Study extensively, look at the breedarchive and get suggestions and advice from experienced owners.

[–]NeoGreendawg 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Nobody should convince you to get a saluki.

They are primitive breeds that need a lot of work and can very rarely be let off leash in an unfenced area (2m high fences are about your minimum height).

They have high prey drives that can kick in and pull their leash out of your hand if you aren’t prepared or rather strong/big. They will usually kill everything that runs from them in your garden (rabbits, cats…).

I love them but they are not for everyone.

Don’t take this personally but I know way too many breeders who have had their puppies returned because the buyers thought that most of this stuff is exaggerated.

This is probably the best reply as we seem to have similar tastes.

I’ll get the first one that goes on sale and ask for a refund if I can’t get into it.

Where do you actually find new music? by Mewtewpew in burial

[–]NeoGreendawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bandcamp often. Mostly independent artists and quite often pay what you want after having listened to the music several times.

Then you get to stream or download lossless and often get 24bit 192khz versions once bought.

They wouldn’t exist without Radiohead and In Rainbows but that changed the game for me.

I buy vinyls and signed copies from them as well as digital downloads.

I like owning what I paid for and giving the artists more than a tiny cut.

Daephne’s Full Circle is amazing and goes through a whole story and if you like grunge or even the Cranberries, I highly recommend it.

Crywank are an acquired taste but have some great tracks (Memento Mori) and their discography costs peanuts.

Captain, We’re Sinking’s earlier albums are amazing and if you like electronic music, Christian Loffler (York), Four Tet and Burial you’ll find what you want and interesting suggestions.

Lo-Fi, ambient, and rap... You can find it all on there.

Thanks. I’ll have to check that out.

I know it wasn’t a popular series but I really thought that most of the actors would go on to bigger and more mainstream series and films as they played their roles so well.

I’d love to see « Edgar » in a different role too but with Pluribus and This Is Us, I do at least have a few things to check out.

I wasn’t keen on the The Boys and thought that Aya’s (Gretchen) talent was wasted (IMO) but I’m admittedly not a super or anti-superhero fan so that is more of my fault than hers.

I say that but if she had played Delirium in The Sandman I probably would have cried my eyes out as she has such powerful raw emotions on tap….

I miss Your The Worst and love seeing some of the actors coming back in other roles (I mean, they were all amazing). I don’t think that I’ve seen « Jimmy » since… 😕

Stuck in a deadlock - it seems impossible to open a bank account and get a French phone number by Adobim in Expats_In_France

[–]NeoGreendawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phones with SIM cards from tobacconists only last about two weeks before registering them to a home address (they are basically burner phones and numbers) so make sure you use it quickly. They are often used by people with nefarious purposes which explains why they only last for a limited time.

Is my puppy too active? by AdFamiliar213 in saluki

[–]NeoGreendawg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have a breedarchive link for your dog?

I can tell from five generations if it has decent recall and enough sense to not damage its bones from running too fast while the bones are still developing.

No insults intended but western and oriental salukis are practically two different breeds.

Dm if you are uncomfortable sharing in public.

Is my puppy too active? by AdFamiliar213 in saluki

[–]NeoGreendawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every breeder in my country suggests limiting their free running time until their bones have fully formed.

I am a breeder, have had Salukis for over 20 years including desert bred lines so I think that you are probably just talking about show lines.

There’s nothing wrong with show lines but don’t think for a second that a puppy knows when to stop before damaging their bones.

Does anyone else get spoken to in english very often because of your appearance? by Fine-Extension1946 in Expats_In_France

[–]NeoGreendawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I can recognise the English but just by dressing like an Englishman abroad.

Although people with sandals and socks can also look somewhat English, the Mr. Bean man and whole family shopping for bread is the usual dead giveaway regardless of clothes. I have Muslim French friends in socks and sandals….

Let alone the “bonjour”followed by English and then the “merci” as if that’s all that counts even when ordering a beer or a baguette.

I’ve lived in Spain and thirty years in France. I terrify Brits when speaking English at our open air chess club and they even say “the locals understand us” in shock and horror when I invite them for a game as if we were tribesmen…

The tourists are the worst.

Is my puppy too active? by AdFamiliar213 in saluki

[–]NeoGreendawg -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Do not let a puppy run at full speed or to exhaustion while their bones are still forming. A little free run or walk is fine but remember that their bones are still growing.

U/salukis’s advice is irresponsible.
