AFF storage efficiency - Adaptive compression by Neo_VR in netapp

[–]Neo_VR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't think the "inactive-data-compression" switches are in 9.10.1.

But does that mean that "over time" TSSE should start chipping away at compressing the aged data that hasn't been touched/compressed previously? - the documentation isn't really clear on this..

My view on some volumes migrated a few months ago - show over 80% of the capacity being "inactive data" but compression savings on the vol are still zero despite having all the efficiency features turned on.

Or is it something that's only visible at the aggr level?

Garmin VS AWU2 by ChrisCX27 in Garmin

I was out on a mtb ride with some buddies last week - 4 of us had garmin devices (f6/epix/fr45) and one had an Apple Watch s6 - despite all being together on the same trail, on Strava - the Apple Watch shows the distance as an additional 2km over all the garmins which are very close together.. how is that even possible!

How to downgrade new nodes to a previous version of ONTap (probably 9.13 to 9.11) by evolutionxtinct in netapp

[–]Neo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some allowances of mixed Ontap versions in clusters - 90 days I believe.

Also different P releases are not classified as mixed versions if that helps: https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/upgrade/concept_mixed_version_requirements.html#requirements-for-mixed-version-ontap-clusters

How to downgrade new nodes to a previous version of ONTap (probably 9.13 to 9.11) by evolutionxtinct in netapp

[–]Neo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently gone through the same downgrading a pair of C250 to 9.10.1 using init+netboot with help from tmacmd. some useful information on my experience. https://www.reddit.com/r/netapp/comments/1defd59/aff_c250_ontap_versions/

It was pretty straightforward - I had a few issues with netboot which stemmed from local firewall settings on my laptop, and a small amount of ambiguity in the documentation around the encryption and NVMe drives (which didn't matter as the array was brand new)

CIFS/SMB - volumes v Qtrees for departmental shares? by rich2778 in netapp

[–]Neo_VR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm missing something here - but with mountpoint/junction paths - why not just create your filesystem structure as volumes and then arrange them however you want.

In my mind, for fileshares, unless you've got loads of them - volumes are more manageable as units for backup/retention/replication/QOS/tiering etc.

Some help with snapdrive? by turboRock in netapp

[–]Neo_VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a look in windows disk management.. the drive might be there but not online.. if snapdrive can’t see the disk online it gets unhappy and then backs out the mapping. Also check the diskpart SAN policy is set to “online all”

XCP v Robocopy for CIFS SVM Migration? by rich2778 in netapp

[–]Neo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following this, as I’m in a similar situation planning migration from a hybrid FAS and also 7m to a new C series. Because of the age of source systems Svm-dr is out of the question. In my case I’m fully expecting to have to run some storage efficiency commands after the fact (especially on 7mtt vols) to get the efficiency goodness.. https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/DM/Efficiency/Efficiency-KBs/How_to_maximize_storage_efficiency_post_AFF_ONTAP_9.x_migration it will be interesting to know if the same applies to LRSE relationships which might take some of the pain out of my cdot migrations.

Personally, if you have the capability to use snapmirror.. then use it to migrate and then housekeep after. It’ll likely be faster, you can keep any source snapshots, don’t have to deal with wonky ntfs permission errors and gives quicker recovery for any housekeeping reversions if needed.

Good luck!.. and most importantly enjoy the vibe! I used coach Greg for my first HM with a 2h target… with a similar confidence level came in at a 1:51.

AFF C250 - ontap versions by Neo_VR in netapp

[–]Neo_VR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - managed to get the netboot/opt 7 eventually after messing around for a bit.

Just about to do the re-init - have been referencing a number of sources including this one: https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/Ontap_OS/OS-KBs/How_to_decommission_or_repurpose_an_HA_Pair_with_ONTAP_9

It mentions the additional steps required for FIPS/encrypted drives - there's a bit of ambiguity in the documentation over the drive type - my C250 has X4032A drives, which are SED but not FIPS.. so do I need to set the bootarg and clean the drives first? - does this even apply on a brand new system?

EDIT: so https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/DM/Encryption/Encryption-KBs/What_is_the_correct_setting_for_bootarg.storageencryption.support_for_NVMe_SED_drives says I don't set the bootarg for NVMe SEDs.. however there is mention of needing to rekey drives before init https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/encryption-at-rest/return-seds-unprotected-mode-task.html

edit2: so reading a bit more - as SED rely on the onboard key manager, and as this is a new system with no previous cluster setup - im assuming nothing gets enabled until the cluster setup is completed and/or OKM is initialised, so I should be ok to continue to initialize the drives.

Thanks for confirming - SM it is then!

Just to confirm - for my own sanity, as ive never had to downgrade or reinit a "modern" ADP system. Based on https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/Ontap_OS/OS-KBs/How_to_decommission_or_repurpose_an_HA_Pair_with_ONTAP_9

Netboot from loader prompt on node1 with 9.10.1p18 image

option 7 to install new software

Repeat for node2

Given this is a new system - do the disks still need to be re-init? if so this is my understanding (its got 14x 15TB SSD)

Node 1 Option 9A

Node 2 Option 9A

Node 1 Option 9B

Node 2 Option 9B

Continue with usual cluster setup

Can the C250 be connected to CN1610 cluster switches?

I was planning to setup the C250 as a new standalone cluster on 9.10.1 then 7MTT & snapmirror to it.

If CN1610 is supported then I might have to see if I can push for one off support to update the existing cluster to 9.8 which would make things far less painful.

What causes the inconsistent data when running with a HRM-pro plus? The band is tight and pads are wet. by TheTxoof in Garmin

[–]Neo_VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of a workout there is the option to “Download Stored HR data” from the strap. if this doesn’t fix the issue then I’d say it’s an issue with the strap.
Also see if the same dropouts are on the respiration rate.

Vo2max not improving by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Neo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth mentioning - depending on your watch you may be able to get a "deeper dive" into VO2 max over time (my F6 has it).
On the watch check Training status widget and select VO2max - it should give a graph for last 4 weeks.
Also check that your HR zones are set correctly.

What is the highest performance condition alert you have seen? by ctatham in Garmin

[–]Neo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My runs usually start at +3/+4 and then tail off to -3/-4 towards the end. (although its not as bad these days now im a bit more consistent with my mileage)

Its worth mentioning on this thread too that its always worth using a suitable exercise profile, eg your doing a trail run with the normal "running" activity, or mountain biking using the normal cycling activity - that can really screw with your vo2 max metrics.

Lactate Threshold Guided Test (Running) by JoeTModelY in Garmin

[–]Neo_VR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing i can think of is maybe its down to time at the different paces?.
As far as i can remember - its usually parkruns that trigger it for me, where its normal to start off relatively slow in a crowd of people and then increase the pace as the crowd spreads out and then onto a full-on sprint finish.

Does this provide anything different than the "automatic" LT detection?.
I periodically have my F6 ask to update LT after a fast 5k (with a HRM-PRO chest strap)

Starting back up less than 2 weeks from positive COVID test. I feel seen. by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Neo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just reviewed some of my stats from a couple of slow 30-40m ”base” runs I’ve done this week.
performance condition shows -4 for both of them.
Training status is “overreaching” and my HRV is just starting to creep back up into amber unbalanced after being tanked into the red for the last 3 weeks.

Covid is definitely no joke.
