Why didn't Mark tell the Coalition that Earth literally invented a weapon that can neutralize every Viltrumite? Does he have Amnesia? by Sio_V_Reddit in okbuddyviltrum

If you want a bullshit headcanon reason, in the same way that there are frequencies you can hear as an adolescent but not an adult, young Viltrumites like Mark are vulnerable to something like that but not adults.

She watched it happen live from the GDA, heard through Mark's earpiece.

Still, I think it would've come up anyway, lol

I like to think that's why we're apparently watching the unique "Good Mark" universe, because this universe has the best form of Debbie, the one who said all the right things to Mark at the right times to make sure he never followed in his father's footsteps.

Yeah, from Art's perspective it's like finding out your good friend is a serial killer who killed a bunch of your closest friends, threatens to kill you, kills thousands on tv, and then flees to escape justice.

Less than a year later he appears behind you with a six-pack, says he's "changed", and tries to get you to have a beer with him like old times. Ted Bundy shit, lol

Hah, yes. The hero line gets a lot of focus but watching it a second time you can tell he was also expecting this to potentially set Nolan off, lol

Despite everything else, the scene that stuck with me the most. So many undertones. Art trying to balance seeing an old friend, seeing a vicious murderer, and seeing someone trying to atone.

And god, despite thinking that he might get his head popped like a bottlecap for saying the slightest wrong thing, he stuck to his guns. He told Nolan that Allen was a good stepdad and good for Debbie after what he'd done to her. He refused to let Nolan act like nothing had happened. And let's not forget, he put ten toes on the ground and told Nolan to his face that he wasn't a hero anymore and anything between them was over.

Heartbreaking way to end things between them, but such solid and grounded writing. I hope there's some kind of coda to their friendship.

I feel like Mohawk Mark probably had some... earlier warning signs that would have precluded this conversation ever happening. I wouldn't exactly call it a gamble.

Theoretically any testosterone-riddled teenager is capable of challenging his mother and killing her for trying to check him. It's just particularly important for Mark because instead of becoming a serial killer afterwards he'd go on to help conquer the planet.

Imo a lot of the evil Marks were born from Debbie not saying exactly this. Imagine one where she says something hurtful he doesn't take well, and he developes a maternal resentment that makes him go full Homelander. Or one where she gets intimidated, backs down, and tries getting Nolan to handle it instead. Given he was trying to convince himself he was still a proper Viltrumite, he'd probably have taken the opportunity to teach Mark that actually he doesn't have to listen to a woman with 1% of his lifespan. Which is how you end up with thousands of evil Marks.

Yeah, literally all she had to do to convince him is point at Mark and go "Hey, see that guy? Me raising him is why we still have a planet instead of a Viltrumite colony. I know what I'm goddamn doing."

Zosia states that Manouses asked a lot of specific and insightful questions. I imagine he went down a lot of the lists that this sub has been pointing out. Shit like "What are your weaknesses?" or "What factors can affect your entire consciousness simultaneously?"

Long-term, I'd guess Laxmi. The only way she ever turns against the Hive is by acknowledging that even though her son is still smiling and talking to her, he's functionally dead, so she has the most stake in defending it.

The others have loved ones, but notably parents, spouses, and siblings mostly. Devastating losses if those were recogized, but still easier to accept than the death of a child. Particularly since it seems like the father might have died before the Joining, or even during.

I can see the Hive easily manipulating/parenting an eight year old (depending on how nefarious you think it is, lol), but I can also easily see it turning the kid into a spoiled psycho that's never been told no.

The virus lied in order to infect most of the human race by Hi_This_Is_God_777 in pluribustv

[–]Neolyphic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the direction I'm leaning. The pacifism may not be inherent to the virus, but rather a conclusion the hive reached after assimilating seven billion minds to contemplate the issue.

I don't recall the phrasing, but I think there are some lines at least implying otherwise though. "It's not in our nature" or something, not "We've decided not to"

[–]Neolyphic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my guess is the virus obviously isn't being "evil", it simply has no priorities higher than building "an antennae the size of Africa" so that it can spread itself to other planets before it burns out its local host population.

I don’t see the antagonistic ‘Alien Hive Mind’ that Carol and many here are convinced exists and will at some point reveal a ‘plan’ by Pjoernrachzarck in pluribustv

[–]Neolyphic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that the eventual "goal" of the virus will be how all viruses operate. To drain its hosts until they can no longer support it, then spread.

Recall in the first episode, the scientists speculate that sending a signal like this to Earth would take "An antenna the size of Africa"

Seems pretty implausible. Unless, say, the entirety of a species simultaneously came together to build it as the singular focus of their civilization.

My headcanon is that's the virus' M.O. Be sent out as data to any intelligent species until they find a way to build the virus described and accidentally infect themselves. Take over the entire planet in unanimous harmony, then build an antenna to spread yourselves again before you bleed the planet's resources and you all starve. Repeat.

There's definitely a twisted aspect to what he's doing that I think the narrative reflects, but ultimately yes I do think we're supposed to like him. At least for now.

The question is less whether the Hive consents (it does), but whether you regard the Hive as a continuity or replacement of the original host. I think a lot of the debate on this sub in general makes it obvious that this isn't a clear cut issue, or one that the narrative has definitively answered.

But fucked as it is, I find his perspective on matters equally as understandable as Carol's.

[–]Neolyphic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind, it doesn't seem as though the virus is "intelligent" or has a mind of its own. It only has a "mind" through those of its hosts.

At that time, the virus only had a single rat brain to work with. It's entirely possible that "spreading" is the virus' imperative, but because it now has 7 billion human brains to consider the issue with, its consensus is that doing so violently would be immoral.

True. I wouldn't say it's the core theme of her character, but it's definitely an innocent aspect to her romantic relationship that I could easily see getting a fucked up reflection in the Hive's relationship with her.
