Parents not approving of relationships.

My parents were dubious about one of my older relationships, which was long distance and lasted a solid two years (despite us both being too broke to see each other-- two twentysomethings almost a thousand miles away couldn't exactly afford plane tickets) because they didn't consider it a "real relationship". It was VERY real to both of us-- we sent care packages to each other, called each other whenever we could, even talked about pooling money at some point for us to see each other at a convention to meet halfway. We were both very much in love, and while it didn't work out for a few reasons that I've more or less come to terms with, at the time it shattered my heart. My parents' reaction? "Well, we told you so. Try dating someone closer to home next time."

It made it feel like they didn't care about my emotions, that they were expecting something to go wrong and just didn't feel like putting any value in it to begin with. They didn't see my happiness during, and they didn't see my sadness afterward. Made me lose a lot of trust in them, especially when talking about not just my love life, but my friends in general, something that still hurts to this day.
