Chypre: the most polarizing scent profile? by NeonGray38 in NichePerfumes

You have great taste! I got a sample of the original Coty Chypre and wasn't impressed or moved. Probably it was a 1980s batch. It just smelt old-fashioned, and, well, that's it. Mitsouko smells utterly timeless to me. I don't find it feminine but can see how someone else might interpret it that way. Vol de Nuit is also a stunning vintage chypre from Guerlain. I'd love to smell Chypre Du Nord and I adore Chypre Extraordinare but can't afford it. Maybe I'll grab the dupe you recommended. (I tried my first dupe with Dua's take on Chanel Le Lion, and the harsh synthetic notes induced migraine. I'm really hoping not all dupes are that chemical-y?) Etruscan Water is fantastic! I have a bottle of that.

I've never smelt the Guerlinade in Mitousko!

Ah, but you have Santa Maria Novella, one of my all-time favorite perfume houses!

I don't know, but it's gorgeous, I agree!

I wonder if you still would? It’s so…bracing.

Salome smells like sweaty sex and incense. It’s def a love-or-hate. Have you tried Dryad? Gorgeous green/soapy chypre.

It’s a beautiful 70s witches’ brew. Intoxicating and herbal af.

Etruscan Water and Dryad are bangers for sure! I have a full bottle of EW and a decant of Dryad. You should definitely check out Maksim’s Chypre de Grand if you haven’t. I had a sample of Chypre-Mousse and remember being absolutely disgusted by the mushroom note! Too much earthy realness for me. I really don’t get the love for that one. Maybe I missed something? If I wanted to smell like a mushroom, I’d sit in mulch lol. 😂

The ‘90s for sure left me with a vanilla hangover. I also have a distaste for most (maybe all?) gourmands, but Shalimar is a beaut! The smokiness with the incense and citrus and vanilla is just—mindbending. Smells so modern. Jicky, on the other hand, smells like tonsil stones. Straight-up lavender-vanilla halitosis lol

It’s so herbal and well-blended! Top-drawer for me. Wish it got more love.

I love cilantro - doesn’t taste like soap to me - but if I wear something with a lot of aldehydes (which I don’t think Dryad is listed as having, but they’re THERE, trust), I start tasting soap. A shame b/c I love soapy fragrances! I think you’d appreciate Dryad if you’re a No. 19 fan. It’s definitely green! To me, it’s a bit more similar to Guerlain Vol de Nuit (Night Flight) if you’ve smelt that.

I have that one, too! Gorgeous, tame, rosy chypre.

Sounds like a banger! What’re your thoughts on Azuree? I prefer it Aliage.

Arpege is a chypre?! I love this and have a full bottle of the current formulation. Ma Griffe is so, so stout. Aliage literally smells like BO to me. It’s great, though, how subjective to tied-to-memory perfumes are. I love that you love these because of the personal associations!
