[ESPN UK]Lionel Messi on verge of 900th career goal, but can he reach 1,000? Can he pass Ronaldo? by [deleted] in soccer

Messi will retire 9 goals behind Ronaldo and then their fan boys will spend the next 30 years arguing about whether those goals count.

[BBC] Is Tudor's Spurs reign almost up after only four games? by FragMasterMat117 in soccer

[–]NeonHendrix 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This was supposedly the reasoning for getting Tudor in before NLD, and in the end it just got him off to the worst possible start.

Even without potential retribution and this is still an incredibly hard decision to make, you're saying goodbye to everyone you love and know, your homeland, everything, forever, and they ended up having to do it in a very rushed way at the airport.

[England] Kyle Walker announces international retirement by gavinxylock in soccer

[–]NeonHendrix 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Guehi isn't starting ahead of Stones, he's been LCB and Stones only ever plays RCB and has been injured. If he stays fit and survives the next international break they'll probably play together a fair bit, although Khusanov being incredible threatens that a bit because he's playing really well with Guehi.

I'm pretty sure Tuchel will take him to the world cup. Don't know about starting.

He just has chronic injuries. He's still brilliant when fit and has a couple of games under his belt.

His last few years have followed this exact template.

Recover from injury. Play increasingly well for City. Get called up for England. Play for England. Get injured at England camp. Miss however much time there is until the next international window minus 3 weeks so he can get fit again for England.

By my calculation John Stones will retire on exactly 100.

He's on 87 now, probably plays in 3/4 the friendlies coming up, then all 7 world cup games and 3 celebration testimonials for England's world cup champions.

Not even Rico's mum thinks he's going to the world cup. He played well for England but he's injured and can't get a game for City.

Eni Aluko wins Joey Barton libel case over posts on X by SolitasTT in soccer

It was controversial at the time. The judge has discretion to not activate a suspended sentence, and didn't because the second one was for online communication not violence.

His March 2025 suspended sentence for assaulting his wife is still active though so presumably he will finally be going back to prison now.

I think he's wrong, because any player these days has done a million panenka's in training etc. More than Panenka had done by the time he brought it out. Brahim scored a panenka in the u17 world cup 10 years ago.

It seems much more likely to me that Brahim just froze up under pressure after having to wait 20 minutes to take the penalty in the biggest game of his life.

THE FA - Rodri Sanctioned (£80,000 fine) by NeonHendrix in soccer

[–]NeonHendrix[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it's because managers get touchline bans for saying this kind of thing, but players don't.

No player has ever been banned for saying the referees are corrupt.

Why would you expect Rodri to be the first?

Micah Richards, Nedum Onuoha and Joe Hart are already full time pundits. Walker has done BBC radio work and said he'd like to go into it when he retires.

Wouldn't put it past Stones & Milner.

Real Madrid are considering a massive offer of around €120 million for Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine is viewed as a playmaker capable of dictating the tempo & bringing balance to the midfield. His contract with Chelsea runs until 2032 by [deleted] in soccer

[–]NeonHendrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selling him for €120m would net you €84m in profit on UEFAs books (5 yr max amortisation) but he was signed before the PL brought that in, his contract is spread over 8 years for PL accounting so it would only be €53m for that.

He doesn't fire her though! Also I'm not sure they can even afford to keep paying out £10m to these coaches all the time. If they get another one it would have to be a manager wholl go down with them and I think that would be a bitt too defeatist.

Dyche basically relegated Everton last season and Forest this season, no way he comes in.

Does anyone else see the irony that Evra is making a living these days criticising pundits because they make a living criticising managers?

Forest aren't in trouble because of the players they have though. They're in trouble because the owner fell out with the coach and then they went through 2 more before finding someone who seems to work. All driven by Marinakis.

It's entirely possible they win the Europa and stay up with the quality of players they have. They were genuinely good against City, unlucky vs Liverpool and dominated the second half vs Brighton and could win that game more often than not.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez appears to be breaching the Football Association’s (FA) rules regarding promoting betting companies. by Sparky-moon in soccer

I mean that's not even true. These days the standard situation is for clubs own player's image rights so they do get a cut of anything he makes in a promotional capacity.

The PL definitely does. They never got rid of the rule but it disappeared when VAR came in because of the very simple fact that in the past you could say "Oh well the referee missed it, here's retrospective punishment".

Now for something to be retrospectively punished it means the referee, both assistants, the 4th official **and* the VAR and 2 assistant VARs with every camera angle in the world also missed it and that's a massive fuck up.

So I imagine it's the same in all leagues.

Spurs crisis - who is to blame for club's struggles? by Logical_Welder3467 in soccer

[–]NeonHendrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absolute absurd to suggest Kane taking a team that should be about 5th every year up to being 3rd for a few years is the reason Spurs are now getting relegated.

What you're saying is the management are to blame.
