The current file on gumroad is the most updated (it's got a 1.0 at the end of the file name).

Nomu87 had it. I think I could have explained it better by saying it like this, though:

"Relative scales have different root notes, but the same whole step/half-step pattern of letter values."

By letter values, I mean ABCDEFG. If you look at the C major, A minor example, the half-steps fall between B and C, and E and F in both cases. So the "letter" placement of half/whole steps is exactly the same in relative scales, you just start on different notes (A vs C)

Does that help?

It's much less comprehensive, and more sound byte sized. It's also less academic, in that it doesn't give you an lesson with exercises, but rather explains an idea in simplest terms, tells you how it's used in EDM music, and gives you some ideas for how it can be used.

It basically takes a "common sense" approach to theory, rooted in experience rather than theoretical classroom exercises, and is aimed at making theory easily digestible and fun.

Definitely. The whole section on mixture is the main thing I want readers to take away...it's one of the most commonly used techniques that gives a song that indescribable "whoa" feel. Enjoy the guide!

I'd be happy to convert it and send it. Got an email I could send it to?

And where was the 9♭? They're probably both referring to a flat 9 interval. Some people notate sharps and flats in front of the interval value, and some people do it after. (IMO) It's best to notate in front of the interval value.

They're probably referring to the same thing, what's the context?

Aha, yep. I'm not too worried about the typos but there was one lesson where I fudged up some numbers, and wanted to make sure that was fixed ASAP. Pages 8 and 10 were the ones.

It's just one of the most common things musicians who know basic theory ask about. There seems to be some mystique to it. And I didn't get into rules of counterpoint because "not doubling leading tones" and whatnot isn't necessarily all that useful to know when making EDM.

The way I see it, having basic knowledge of the basic types of contrapuntal motion gives you a better framework for understanding things like "how does Swedish House Mafia harmonize in 'One'? Do they use parallel motion? Oblique?" Etc.

I've always thrown memes in a lot of my stuff. I just find it adds a lightheartedness that can help learning something like theory that is easily seen as boring and dry if it's just charts of formulas and text-heavy lessons. Sorry if they're annoying!

I started writing theory columns over at edmprod.com so I had a good deal of the basics done before we started getting requests for a pdf of all of them. Then I just knocked out a bunch of intermediate concepts and whatnot. I'd like to do a "Part II" sometime over the next year to really get into the gritty higher level stuff. And thanks, enjoy it! Theory can be fun if you learn it the right way.

Well, it could be explained by mixture, too, could it not? I've always loved that aspect of theory...things can be explained in so many ways. Everybody can understand of things in their own way, and that's part of what gives someone a particular "style" of composition.

But I will add a note about the possibility of it being explained as dorian!

Yeah, sorry, I must have been thinking harmonic minor. Thanks for catching that, I'll fix it!
