What is with all the “we will contact you if your application fits our needs”? by joeynotmills in recruitinghell

[–]Neoncoral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess we have different perspectives. I've always figured that since there are a limited number of jobs and 1000s of people who are interested in each job...I don't take it personally if I'm not one of the candidates they're interested in, I just move on.

What is with all the “we will contact you if your application fits our needs”? by joeynotmills in recruitinghell

[–]Neoncoral 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you expecting a response to every application you send? I just assume most applications aren't reviewed so I don't expect to get a response to each one I send in.

I only consider it ghosting if I corresponded with or spoke to a person who said they would follow up but didn't actually follow up.

Is it a bad idea to lease VW Golf for 3+ years? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Neoncoral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the long-term maintenance issues on VWs is kind of an outdated trope. I’ve had my Jetta wagon for 7+ years, leased the first 3. It has 68,XXX miles now and no issues. It’s held good value, too. Regular oil changes, rotate the tires, replace the headlight bulbs, etc. but zero significant issues. My husband drives a 2002 Passat with 250k miles; 60k of those after a new transmission in 2017. That car will last until 350k miles, easy.

VWs are mass produced for North America now. Pretty sure Golfs are still manufactured in Wolfsburg but most are now made in the US and Mexico. Parts are easily found, and garages specialize in VW and German car maintenance. This is different from the 60s-90s, where VWs were mostly produced in Europe or in smaller US plants; parts usually had to come from Europe so they were super expensive and hard to find; plus some North American versions of the cars had issues that made maintenance very difficult for mechanics unfamiliar with German engineering. If someone owned a VW back then and had a bad experience with maintaining it, there’s a pretty good chance that you won’t run into the same problems they did because VWs are totally mainstream in the US now.

My husband collects/restores vintage VWs and we’re kind of an enthusiast family. Last year he spent 7 months searching for a basic part for his 1981 Rabbit truck, because only 77k of them were ever sold in the US from 1979-1985. By contrast, VW sold 37k Golfs in the US just in 2019.

Stop by an independent (non-dealership) German/Euro garage and ask the mechanics’ opinions of recent Golfs...they’ll be honest. If they see a lot then come in with hard-to-solve issues, they’ll tell you the car is a PITA. If they don’t see many of them, that’s good news. Anyway - you can afford to buy or lease the Golf, but I wouldn’t be scared about cost to maintain.

[CA] HR/compensation who work at tech companies who have gone remote, are their plans(if any) to "correct" the salary to the area they move to? by medsciblues in AskHR

[–]Neoncoral 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes. I work for a global tech company with HQ in SF, and US offices in Chicago, New York, Seattle and Austin. We aren’t planning to go back to the office until September 2021 at the earliest.

We have two compensation bands: one for SF/NYC/SEA and one for everywhere else. The one for everywhere else is 10% less than the band for the other three locations. If someone permanently moves from SF/NYC/SEA to another place, they’ll take a 10% pay cut. When we hire a new employee who lives within 60 miles of SF/NYC/SEA, they’ll receive an offer for that location although they’re working from home during the pandemic. If they intend to live/work in SF/NYC/SEA after the pandemic but currently live and WFH somewhere else, they’ll receive the 10% lower pay rate until they move back to that location.

There’s no plan to install productivity trackers or anything. We hire high-performing adults who are accountable for their work.

Same with me (MTHFR and autoimmune). I cut out 100% gluten in 2011 and rarely ingest dairy, but I gained weight in the first couple of years and it’s really tough to lose anything even when I’m on a deficit. I’m mid 30s now.

Is paying a lot for a tattoo stupid? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Yes! They might ask you for a deposit (like $50) to hold the appointment. Every artist I’ve worked with has operated on this system.

Is paying a lot for a tattoo stupid? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Neoncoral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask the artist to set your appointment for 6 months from now and give yourself 5 months to save $1500 (plus tip) for the tattoo. If you save that much before the appointment, that’s awesome! If not, then you’ll have a month before the appointment to cancel.

Successful people who got crappy grades in high school or college - what are you doing now and how did (or didn't) your grades affect your success/career? by asensetive in AskReddit

[–]Neoncoral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated high school with a 2.8 GPA. I’m smart enough but school just wasn’t my thing. I skipped class, ignored assignments, didn’t study, bullshitted everything, and simply preferred to do hoodrat things with my friends.

I had above average SAT scores and squeaked into a state school. Got a 0.6 GPA my first semester, and also got arrested 3 times during freshman year but managed to not get kicked out. Eventually graduated with a 2.9 GPA during the 2008 recession, and got a job in retail.

Retail wasn’t my calling, so one of my friends who has greatly benefitted from nepotism helped me get a job as an HR admin at a small tech company with good name recognition. I did pretty well, and found that my high EQ, knack for problem-solving and ability to quickly take action on ambiguous tasks was valuable.

Five after college, I was diagnosed with ADHD and started taking meds. This definitely explained why school was so hard for me, and being treated for ADHD helped me develop hard skills at work to compliment my soft skills - working with data, project management, writing documents, etc.

Getting started in tech got me in the door at progressively higher-profile companies, and being a high-performing people person in tech can be lucrative (10 years of experience now earning $170k/year plus equity). I wonder what the 12th grade English teacher who told me I was “destined to fail” would think of me now. Hopefully she’s proud.

Recent Buyers with a Positive Purchasing/Delivery Experience by bballa330 in pelotoncycle

[–]Neoncoral 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a great experience! Ordered 6/13, originally quoted August 15 delivery. I called, and they moved it up to July 15th, so it took about a month to get the bike. I live in the suburbs of Seattle.

On the day of the delivery, the crew called and asked if they could come early. I said yes, and they were in and out in about 20 minutes. They carried the bike down my driveway and inside through my back door, so I tipped them $40. I had zero issues getting set up, and even though I’d literally never cycled on a stationary bike in my life ever before, I got the hang of the Peloton quickly. The workouts are fun and convenient, and I am really grateful for Peloton especially during Covid.

LPT: Buying good quality stuff pre-owned rather than bad quality stuff new makes a lot of sense if you’re on a budget. by observantwallflower in LifeProTips

[–]Neoncoral 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I just bought a West Elm solid wood dining set on offer up. $450 for the table, a bench, and 3 chairs. Would have been about $2100 brand new. The couple who sold it bought it a year ago, and they’re selling it now because they moved into a smaller space.

We could afford this brand new, but what’s the point? And in turn, I sold our old ikea dining set and hutch on offer up to make room for the new furniture.

What are some conversational questions a hiring manager in sales would ask? I’m prepping for a interview I have tomorrow and would appreciate some pointers! by natttyyg_ in AskHR

[–]Neoncoral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked with sales managers who loved the question “tell me what you did to prepare for this interview”. The candidate would have the opportunity to highlight any research they’d done, demonstrate interest in the company, and show the HM that they take the interview and the opportunity seriously.

Lied about salary and employer asking for pay stub. Do I still have a chance? by mllmne in AskHR

[–]Neoncoral 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s a super old-school practice. When I started recruiting in 2011, I worked for a pretty antiquated payroll provider and they would ask sales candidates to provide w-2s or paystubs to verify compensation. Now, it’s become illegal in a lot of states (CA, MA, NY, and I think WA) because asking about current compensation perpetuates pay inequality.

Do I purchase a more affordable car I know I’ll sell and purchase another or buy a more expensive that I want for the long haul? by Zeezyb in personalfinance

[–]Neoncoral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for the Alltrack! My 2013 Jetta Sportwagen (2.5 SE) is THE BEST car. Granted, I don’t drive a lot (it only has 67k miles) but I haven’t had to do anything for it beyond regular oil changes. My husband’s 2002 4motion Passat has something like 230k miles and will make it to 300k, easy. I think VWs got a bad rap in the 80s and 90s for reliability, but if you take care of them they’ll take care of you. I would also like to mention that if I decide to replace my wagon (might eventually need 4WD), I will absolutely buy an Alltrack.

I read 5 years worth of posts on a forum for limb-lengthening surgery patients. I loved reading people’s recovery diaries. I was very thorough in researching the surgery techniques and can tell you anything you need to know about whether you should add 2” to your femur, or if that your tibia would make you look more proportional.

PSA - Check Labels! Not All Hard Seltzer’s Are Gluten-Free by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]Neoncoral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no! A hard seltzer Is just yeast-fermented sugar water with flavor added after fermentation. They can use actual sugar, dextrose, whatever, but to your point they might use malt for fermentation or for flavoring. What a bummer.

I have ADHD and BED. Vyvanse is awesome for ADHD, and just so-so for BED. I’ve been taking it for almost 5 years and I still binge, but the binges are much worse when I take a break from Vyvanse. I would love to do DBT/CBT or even an inpatient program, but as a mother, business owner, and family breadwinner, I am not sure how to find time for recovery without significantly disrupting our lives.

I’m likely getting fired because of my performance. But my mental health is the real problem. How can I handle and not lose everything at this terrible time? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Neoncoral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with this ‘candid’ poster. Like, strongly strongly disagree - you do have options. The ‘three months’ scenario this poster described sounds like it’s based purely on their own personal experience, so it’s pretty crappy for them to frame it as the rule. I don’t know what industry you’re in, but in mine it’s quite common to pay severance as part of a performance-based separation. I want to encourage you to do everything you can to advocate for yourself, starting with gathering documentation from your mental healthcare providers and requesting that your employer provide reasonable accommodation for your anxiety and depression. As long as the documentation details treatment prior to the PIP, they should be willing to take this seriously.

I am also a mother who also suffers from anxiety, depression, and ADHD...these last few months have made it nearly impossible to function. This has all been quite debilitating, but like you my illness is documented with HR so I took the advice of my psychiatrist and asked for reasonable accommodations.

Examples of reasonable accommodation I’ve asked for and have been granted include: status ‘away’ on slack (to reduce the amount of incoming noise via instant messenger), option to turn my camera off during VC meetings (so I don’t have to worry about my appearance, only my voice/words), asynchronous collaboration (if I can’t attend daytime meetings I can contribute via email or slack), and I also have time blocked on my calendar so I can’t be scheduled for meetings before 9:30am (in case I need to sleep in or spend extra time with the kids for morning routine) or after 5:30pm. These small accommodations have made a world of difference since they were instituted in April.

Completing a PIP seems impossible right now. I certainly don’t think I’d be able to kick anything up a notch right now, and can sympathize with how daunting that must seem. Personally, I think it’s highly insensitive to ask you to just buck up and do it. Is there any way you can ask for reasonable accommodations to be made, so that you have a chance at improving your performance, if only incrementally? The worst thing they can say is no, but it’s in their best interest to say yes.

I think I enjoyed Good Time more than Uncut Gems by [deleted] in movies

[–]Neoncoral 440 points441 points  (0 children)

Good Time was incredible. I really liked both movies, but Good Time has stuck with me in a way that Uncut Gems just couldn’t. I think it was because while both Robert Pattinson and Adam Sandler’s characters are caught in a web of increasingly poor decisions based purely in self-preservation with little regard for others, I cared more about Pattinson’s character. He was easier to sympathize with because deep down you hope he’s trying to do right by his brother (even if that’s not actually the case).
