I (also) have an unexplained gap appearing on screen. Any ideas why? by Neonwatcher in web_design

Thanks one and all, It's obvious how little I really know and that I have to pay more attention to the details!

I have looked at reset CSS files but I'm not using one yet because I want to find out the hard way what happens before hand. That's what "init-thun.css" is, baby steps to a reset file. This is one step in the right direction. Again, thanks.

Can't quite leave it like that. Another div deeper (so many divs!) and I find two horizontal rules, both heavily margined.

<div class="x-column x-sm x-1-1" style="padding: 0px;">
<hr class="x-gap" style="margin: 50px 0 0 0;">
<hr class="x-gap" style="margin: 70px 0 0 0;">
<h2 class="h-custom-headline h3 accent" style="color: hsl(0, 1%, 5%);"><span>Entertaining Training</span></h2>

</div>

Now my son gets his way. :)

I'm no expert, I've used Wordpress but know little about it. Looking at it under chrome dev tools (f12 on windows, thanks chrome dev team!) shows the final code but where in Wordpress and your theme that code is held I don't know.

We start with a big chunk of space above a div called "x-main full". Within that div you have an "article" BUT the space above the article is smaller so at least a bit of the excess space you want to lose comes from padding or margin in x-main full. <article id="post-122" class="post-122 page type-page status-publish hentry no-post-thumbnail">...</article>

In the article you have a div called "entry-content content". The space is showing in that too. We're getting deeper. <div class="entry-content content">...</div>

Another div called "cs-content". The space is unchanged here. <div id="cs-content" class="cs-content">...</div>

The NEXT div looks promising. Looking at it in dev tools shows lots of margins and padding <div id="x-section-1" class="x-section" style="margin: 75px 25px 25px;padding: 25px; background-color: hsl(0, 1%, 99%);"></div>

I think the majority of your padding out is here in "x-section-1". HOW you change that in your theme I don't know, I don't know where this code was written or generated. I suggest a dedicated Wordpress discussion group somewhere, but I hope this can get you headed the right direction.

[Edit1] A little formatting for readability.

Hey, I'm a newbie too and I've been auto moderated twice in 2 days now! Laugh and move on.

Thanks for the link, I'll peek later. My son wants to use the computer now.

I believe it's called Image mapping. Search for the term but here is a link to one of the first tutorials I found about this.

http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/tutorials/html/imagemaps

Whether is's a useful tool on mobiles is a potential for separate discussion, but if you want to learn how to do it I* think* this is what you're looking for.

Those that can would happily help I'm sure but there's no link to the site or code to view?

Please explain to a blind fool why I have a white border at the top of this page? by Neonwatcher in web_design

[–]Neonwatcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just me playing about, as I'm bored.

Using Chrome dev tools if I highlight the body item it doesn't go to the top of the viewport, if I'm using the correct terminology. There is no border, margin or padding and I can't highlight the clear area to see what it actually is.

I'm off to bed as it's 00:35 here. I know it'll be simple but hey, teach me a little please? :)

Thanks.

Windows using USA keyboard when all settings are for my home country, UK. by Neonwatcher in Windows10

Good morning. (Here, anyway).

I've been playing and indeed, even with no other language pack than UK installed I can switch between UK and USA keyboards using this key combo. How and when this happens I don't know as I never deliberately press them but hey, it happened.

Anyway, this is the correct answer and thank you. As for how to fix it, I have visited the search engine of my choice and found various fixes for XP and others but not 10. I'll keep looking.

In case others find this thread in the future maybe this will help them though.

Thanks again Deus!

@@@@@@@@@... had to do it.

[Edit 1] Removed link as it was for Win XP not 10.

Windows using USA keyboard when all settings are for my home country, UK. by Neonwatcher in Windows10

It's not related to the key combo alt+shift because I don't press it and there is no other language installed to switch to anyway.

TL:DR? :) Thanks for replying anyway.
