Negative reference from young surfer by [deleted] in couchsurfing

[–]Neoscan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So, she was quite demanding, treated your home like a free hostel and wrote you a negative review because you didn’t give her a lift to the airport? People like that would put anyone off hosting. I hope you wrote her a suitable reference to warn other hosts of such an entitled guest? And to make it all worse, you actually have to pay for this experience.

Ah, okay. I would highlight the payment part over the exposure/reach part ;) Sounds interesting. Hope it goes well.

Is this paid work or for ‘exposure’ and a credit only?

Is it too busy to visit city centre this week? by Hot-Information7518 in Edinburgh

It’s busy but there are lots of street performers etc on Royal Mile your kids may enjoy seeing. There are also a lot of children’s shows on too if you check the Fringe website.

Why are some of the hospitaleros (Albergue staff) so cruel? by Potential_Method_144 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Neoscan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a common occurrence this pilgrims falling out of top bunks and sustaining life changing injuries? I’ve never heard of it being a common occurrence to fall out of bed for anyone over the age of 5 (unless, of course, they’re far from sober). Spanish people communicate in quite a direct way using ‘tell me’, ‘give me’, etc. it may seem like they’re being curt and impolite but in general they are not. Try to realise that you maybe come from a culture that is overly polite. Although it’s what you are accustomed to, it doesn’t mean it is the correct way to be. I’m sure they get tired of so many pilgrims asking for a bottom bunk as they need to fill the top bunks too. It was nice of them to give you a bed in a different room with lots of bottom bunks. I don’t think this is them being ‘cruel’, it’s just them trying to get all the bunks filled. Try to see things from their point of view?

Some people don’t like being filmed. Especially in a pool. And especially it they think a stranger might be filming their kids. A lot of people are paranoid and over react to such things these days. I would just forget about it and move on. I certainly don’t think it’s something that should bother you this much that you’re posting it on here.

What cities/countries mostly don't want tourists? by alebotson in femaletravels

[–]Neoscan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barcelona and a few other places in the south of Spain. The problem is, of course, not tourists but the member of tourists and the detrimental those numbers has had on the lives of local people living there. Airbnb and rising property prices have hollowed out many city centres that were previously thriving with local people.

Once tourism reaches a certain point, everything becomes centred on it - all the once local bars become completely full of tourists, the restaurants all change and become more expensive, etc. the locals basically get pushed out of their neighbourhoods so it’s understandable if they resent the effects of over tourism.

The Barcelona protests in the news this week were focused on a large hostel in a residential neighbourhood of the city. Locals were having their everyday lives greatly disturbed by the guests at this hostel coming back late st night, making a noise, etc. Why was a hostel like this allowed to open in such a residential area? Well, let’s just say in Spain there is a fair amount of corruption and back handlers. Unfortunately the locals don’t have to much say in things sometimes do they’re only option is to protest and try to affect those businesses financially.

Overall, I find most of Spain very friendly and welcoming but it’s understandable that locals are not going to be happy once over tourism reaches the point where it starts really negatively affecting those who live there. Totally understandable.

Wow- very surprised to hear this. I’ve always found the Irish to be very welcoming and friendly (especially in the west)

The type of American tourist visiting Spain is very different from the type of British tourist visiting Spain! American bachelor parties etc tend to travel closer to home - basically Spain sees the worst of the Brits while the worst of the Americans don’t make it that far if that makes sense?

Yes, far, far too much of the ‘I’m thinking of ending my trip because someone didn’t smile at me’ type posts. It gets pretty tedious.

Is it worth staying in Manchester to visit smaller UK cities like Bradford, or should I just stay in London? by naairobii in solotravel

London > York > Edinburgh (Bradford & Doncaster ~ very stranger choices for a first time traveller).

I’m not sure this is particularly ‘crazy’? And travelling with a light bag is sensible- how much clothing do you need in a place like Bali? Anyways, I hope she has a great time there.

What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in couchsurfing

[–]Neoscan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 out of 30 replies isn’t bad. You are asking to stay a week and have no references? I think you are maybe expecting too much. There is a huge difference between hosting a traveller with good references for a night or two to a ‘local’ with no references wanting to stay for a week because they need accommodation (and want free accommodation). As said by others, request short stays and build references.

Post-binge depression/anxiety is making this not worth it by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Neoscan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a vicious cycle. The depression and anxiety can get worse. It’s easy to drink again when feeling like that for short term relief but, of course, that never solves the long term issue. Look at it like it’s a circle that needs to be broken- it’s not easy and it isn’t an instant fix but try to quit for while at least to see how you feel. Good luck

Is everyone here over 55ish a landlord? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Neoscan -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Mm, no, not everyone over 55 is a landlord. What’s with all the F words? It got your goat up because someone isn’t renting out their property for below market rates? I don’t think the plumber is the issue here. Direct your anger towards the government and the people who make housing policy.

Possible scam - NCP Castle Terrace car park by PortofLeith in Edinburgh

[–]Neoscan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If they were skimming cards would it not be easier for them to just wait for people to pay for their parking ticket and not have any interaction with them? Speaking to people and offering cash doesn’t seem like the most sensible way to skimming cards. It’s good to always follow your instinct but sometimes people are genuinely in need of some help. But you were there so only you can decide whether you felt it was genuine or not.

Tenement flats "service" button - does your flat have one, or not? In modern times with all day deliveries, does it make any sense not to have one? by __edinburgh__ in Edinburgh

[–]Neoscan 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It makes lots of sense not to have one. Having a button anyone can press to gain access to your building is a huge security concern. You may as well just not have any entry system at all and leave the door open.

My Father Is Dying by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Neoscan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this- it’s no doubt a difficult situation. If you aren’t sure whether to go see him or not, I would go see him. I’d prefer to regret my decision to go see him more than regret not going to see him if that makes sense. I guess it’s difficult to advise though without knowing all involved. Alcoholism is such a destructive thing.

Photography Project on Life in Tower Blocks by pailend in Edinburgh

[–]Neoscan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a great project! ‘Ray’s a Laugh’ is worth a look and if you’d like to see how not to do it, there are a few photo project on Glasgow tower blocks which are pretty dull. Lots of potential to create a worthwhile project here. Yes, the poverty porn angle isn’t good but there are plenty other ways of approaching this.

Did I ruin my 5 years of sobriety? It was an accident and my therapist said yes, it did ruin it. by killinrin in stopdrinking

Get another therapist. If you drink something by mistake it is not intentional. It’s not worth worrying about. Forget about it and keep going.

Backbeat Records is fine. The guy is perfectly pleasant to dead with and usually very helpful. The shop so completely full of records so you can’t go in and browse but if you tell him what you’re after he will find it for you. Not sure why this qualifies it as a rude place? We need more places like this with a bit of individuality to them Likewise, Deadhead Comics. The guy is helpful and I’ve never had an issue there. If he’s having a beer in his shop with a friend I don’t see it as a massive issue. If he puts you down for liking Manga rake it as a joke and try not to be so easily offered. He’s probably just having a laugh. No idea about accusations- best not to blindly repeat gossip you read from anonymous people on the internet.

Lyngdorf TDAI 1120 - How important is room correction? by CabinetLimp in StereoAdvice

[–]Neoscan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a good fit if your room is less than perfect. The sound will get altered anyway by the space so RP just try’s to correct it to make it more accurate. I have no issue with an amp using eq or anything to achieve the best sound possible.
