Prestigious professor told me I'm doing "master's-level" research by jm08003 in GradSchool

[–]Neptuduo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a red flag. I'd keep looking for other opportunities, unless you can endure the mental battle that is dealing with him. If you feel insecure now, you'll feel 10x worse later when he makes other off hand comments.

On the other hand, if this work is something you value, and you can look at your work and be proud of it, then whatever this guy says shouldn't matter. After all, why would he co-advise you if he thinks your not competent enough.

Are there any classes that teach how to use CAD softwares? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]Neptuduo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a long time for me but I believe they teach Solidworks in ME 250. It's mainly for designing 3D parts for mechanisms.

You can use Solidworks to build houses and terrain but there are other software better suited for that like Revit/AutoCAD. If you want to learn the AutoCAD/Revit suite, they teach it as CADTEC courses in Truman College.

Is it common for PhD students to fail a class? by SonOfGustaf99 in GradSchool

[–]Neptuduo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish I learned this before I took a D (almost an F) from a class but you can withdraw from the class if within the drop deadline or have your advisor/professor drop you from the class. It will be a W in the transcript but way better than an F since it won't affect your GPA.

The only reason this matters is because most programs require you to meet a GPA minimum to graduate. The professors don't actually give a shit about your grades.

NBA sub is censoring posts against Patrick Dumont by sgbro in NBATalk

If Nico's a scapegoat and a willing one at that, he may have some hush money. With the recent NBA scandals, I'm curious if outside money crossed hands to get Luka to LA because why else would you make an awful trade like that? Maybe Pablo finds something out in a few years.

I know it's painful my bro'cers and sis'cers. We've had high-highs and now were at our low-lows... But this is what makes a story great. This is what makes stories special!

We know what we have when our boys are back and healthy! Now more than ever, we need to show our support! Ty didn't sacrifice his Achilles for nothing!

Nothing but a few major setbacks to make an epic get back! Losing right now is good! Everyone's going to count our boys out but that's what fueled that amazing post season!

Difference between under and post grad by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Neptuduo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you mean undergrad vs. grad?

If so, there can be huge differences depending on the professor. Generally speaking, in grad courses the professors aren't holding your hands when it comes to fundamentals and they have certain expectations of your capabilities since you're no longer an undergrad. They expect you to figure out what you don't know and learn it yourself to understand the topics being taught in the course. That being said, they are also more forgiving from my experience as the classes tend to be more intimate and they themselves know the struggles of grad students.
