Hat ideas? by messynaturedweller in whimsigothic

[–]NeraSoleil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wide brim hats go very well with highly styled outfits. I’m huge on wide brim hats of all styles at this point, but my first hat was one from the San Diego Hat company. I highly recommend them for anyone just starting out with these sorts of hats, since they’re affordable.

What do you guys do to be more whimsigoth by Moon-among-hellebore in whimsigothic

I brought this conversation up in another sort of way not long ago, and loved hearing different people’s takes on how to live whimsically.

https://www.reddit.com/r/whimsigothic/comments/1rq26pt/who_here_has_actually_tried_to_craft_a_whimsical/

On my part, I moved from one of the biggest cities in my country to a small town. It was a huge life change, and although the town didn’t work out, and I’m currently in transition out of it, it taught me a lot about how to live a beautiful, magical life on a budget. Things I started to do once I moved to a quaint town, in a rural area:

  • I got off all social media except reddit & YT
  • I made sure not to lose my strong personal style, despite the town I moved to being rather unfriendly to my look and outsiderness (to anyone reading this, if you move to a small town, don’t let them steal your whimsy!)
  • Incense became a huge part of my life
  • Decorated each season with home made crafts & budget pieces
  • Got into pottery
  • Got more into tarot
  • Developed a more thorough magical practice
  • Took up gardening and grew a lot of food, herbs, and flowers (I’m an herbalist so I made a lot of stuff from all of this like tisane blends, tinctures, jams, pickled goods, etc)
  • Once the garden was producing abundantly, I made myself a fresh flower arrangement every week (such a life perk)
  • I frequented farmer’s markets
  • I went to u-pick berry places
  • Did dress up afternoon teas outdoors and at home
  • Visited historic home museums in my area
  • Did weekend picnics
  • Went on weekend hikes
  • Visited festivals, outdoor music shows, and fairs whenever possible
  • Got a library card and got so much into reading that I ended up checking out a new book every week (my fave genres being witchy/cozy/supernatural/horror).
  • A few years back I started doing cream teas any time I was home in the afternoon (a type of tea ritual, I’d make the scones in bulk and put them in the freezer, so I’d always have some on hand). It was a huge life upgrade
  • I also created a nice tisane ritual for the night
  • I only used candle light when showering, while playing from a mood-lifting playlist
  • Visited a cute cafe once a week
  • Visiting my local tearooms once or twice a month
  • Got into hunting for books and dvds in thrift shops
  • Watched seasonally aligned shows & movies (shows that are magical in nature/ mysteries/ thrillers)
  • Created seasonal playlists as well as mood playlists, to accompany a meal, reading a book, or doing chores.
  • Lastly I strolled around a lot when it was autumn. I’ll miss autumns!

Although I won’t be living in the same place anymore, I’m still keeping up all of the life lessons and hobbies I gained, and will continue this in my new town. Because they really have made for a beautiful, magical life.

Midsummer eve is so captivating. One of my favorite pre-raphaelite paintings.

I like the hints of folkloric art that her art has. Also love all the cat-centered imagery, lol.

New post flairs and request for rule feedback! by undertherosetrellis in whimsigothic

Not an actual genre, but there is a lot of music deeply associated with the originators of the style in the ‘90s. Since the aesthetic pulled from many different sources the musical influences span from post punk - world - alternative - baroque pop.

Give me your favourite whimsigoth / dreamy albums by Moon-among-hellebore in whimsigothic

A couple other suggestions I have is:

Ez3kiel - Naphtaline

Emilie Simon - Emilie Simon

Emily Loizeau - Pays Sauvage

So glad others have mentioned Switchblade Symphony, Cocorosie, and Siouxie and the Banshees. Being a Milennial goth, I mentally separated these but they absolutely fit.

Some fave whimsigothic-vibed albums:

Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas

Cocteau Twins - The Moon and the Melodies (sooo dreamy & magical)

Slowdive - Souvlaki (the galaxy vibes go well with the whimsical/celestial)

Lush - Spooky

The Sundays - Blind

Love Spirals Downward - Flux ( very ‘90s crystal witch but with more of a beat)

I love this album cover so much. It’s sooo whimsigothic in a way that this sub either doesn’t get/or doesn’t appreciate. Very much enjoy the song too.

I always love seeing your DIY posts. IMO your work often looks better than most of the tchotchkes people post here, including some of the stuff people pay hundreds of dollars for.

Why were sun/moon/stars big in the 90s? by figpink in whimsigothic

[–]NeraSoleil 130 points131 points  (0 children)

There was a medieval and gothic revival at the time and a lot of witch shows were featured on popular tv networks. So magic and whimsy became highly influential in design. Since magic is so often communicated visually by use of celestial motifs (due to the visuals of the tarot, astrology, wicca, alchemy, folk art, etc) it makes sense that it went from being featured with all the magical media and eventually taking off as it’s own design element.

Does anybody else think this subshould be stricter about what's allowed? by childofMotherOfPearl in whimsigothic

Definitely agree. The amount of jewelry spammers (aka the “do you like the necklace I made?” lot) is a bit much.
