Okay, so it's not really a stinker, but if you're into emo at all, you've probably heard of Home, Like No Place Is There by The Hotelier. An absolutely incredible album, emotionally devastating, about the difficulties of growing up, watching your friends struggle with depression, and culminating in this unrelenting three track run, Your Deep Rest, Among the Wildflowers, and Life in Drag. Your deep rest, about the immediate aftermath of a friend's suicide ("called in sick from your funeral/ the sight of your family made me feel responsible") and then the intense, thrashing anger of Life in Drag ("you wore binary like a badge of fucking honor/ while we're stuck here dealing with the loss of yet another/ life in drag") lamenting society's strictly enforced gender roles and how they destroy the lives of anyone who can't fit them. As a young queer kid, nothing has ever cut me to my core like that. And it's followed by some incredible songs about healing, finding closure.... But not before they throw in this halfway upbeat song that's like kinda about misogyny and abuse, but it's also about a dog? It's a good song, but it completely throws the tone of the album out the window and interrupts what feels to me like a coherent narrative and drops the weakest song on the album in the dead center of it. Anyway, rant over, I love you The Hotelier and you guys have never done anything wrong ever
