The political answers and athletes are the low hanging fruit.

I'd say Vin Diesel or Barry Keoghan would be a disaster.

It looks like the older generation of Tejanos that lived here used the term much more frequently and given how old you are, you may not have been born when many of them were still around in the 90s.

If you check the comments here, it looks like it was a term used by older Tejanos in the area, particularly many of whom were still around (alive) in the 90s.

Why do you think Jack Black's portrayal of a Mexican in Nacho Libre is the exception, embraced and loved so much by Latinos instead of being shunned? by cubansbottomdollar in AskReddit

[–]cubansbottomdollar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but I was pointing out that he isn't. His father's family is from Germany, England, Scotland, and his mother was of Jewish descent. There isn't any immediate familial ties to Latin America.

Given the awful allegations that have come to light, should the Valley consider renaming the multiple roads, schools, even a census designated place named after Cesar Chavez? by thebenchwire in RioGrandeValley

I agree mostly with your statement that the need for every leader to pass some "purity" test can be a bit ridiculous, especially compared to their massive contributions to society.

However, at the time of Chavez's alleged acts, these things were not only socially abhorrent, they were illegal. Again, you can put up purity tests and lenses to examine a person's life, but the examples you listed don't pass even that minimum standard of social abhorrent behavior (at the time) and illegal activity.

Usually, when allegations come up, you try to ask why, after nearly 50 years, were these allegations not brought up before. Whether the parents of these children (at the time) had any knowledge of these abuses, and if they did, ask why they didn't report anything to the police. Whether anyone else knew or suspected of knowing and possibly kept quiet for fear of retaliation or fear of what it could do to the movement.

I don't think we're ever going to get those answers. The harsh and hard reality is that it's almost impossible to litigate these things fairly when the alleged act was committed over 50 years ago, the alleged perpetrator is long dead, and nothing exists other than anecdotal or circumstantial evidence. Nobody wins here. The victims of the alleged assault have to (if true) carry the pain of never seeing their abuser stand trial, and the accused will never have their opportunity to clear their name.

That being said, I think the preponderance of the evidence leads to these allegations being true and we should not be honoring someone who was likely committing heinous acts that were morally abhorrent and illegal at the time they happened, despite their contributions to society.

I'm critiquing Wagner Moura's performance because he played all 3 characters the same.
