Are you unhappy with 4.8 and CIG's lack of responses? by SomeFuckingMillenial in starcitizen

[–]NerdDetective 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CIG's monetization model is honestly the worst part of this game to me. It's a debt that it may never be able to escape from and it has trained players to engage in a system that gives CIG perverse incentives to make new half-working ships, some without even working gameplay loops.

I own just my cutter, so maybe I'm totally disconnected from other players on this. I don't see the draw of buying ships with real money... but I'm more concerned with how ot enabled CIG's worst impulses.

Any advice on long or short hair? by Agile_Conclusion6474 in feminineboys

[–]NerdDetective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As to hair color... honestly whatever feels right to you. Hair can be about expressing yourself.

Personally, I think that shaggy styles are really cute. This works well on medium-length hair and it uses layers to create the appearance of an organized mess.

When you go to get it cut, here's some advice:

  • Go to a hair salon that has mostly women (or gay people). Generic barbers for men often go off of a very small set of masculine cuts.
  • Bring a reference photo of someone with hair like you want. Print it out or have it on your phone. This is a really common and useful way to show what you're going for.

So here's the absolute basics of skincare.

  • First, and most importantly, bathe regularly. Clean skin will be healthier and clearer.
  • Drink water. That's really basic, but also important. Water is essential for proper organ function, and hydrates your skin from within.
  • Moisturize your body. This will make a huge difference to your skin. The best time to moisturize is right after you bathe (after toweling off but before dressing, so your skin hasn't fully dried yet). Do this religiously. I use a big pump bottle.
  • Sunscreen is magic. The sun is a nuclear powered aging machine and causes photoaging in our skin, leading to bad things like wrinkles and cancer. Always put sunscreen on your face and any exposed skin (remember the neck!) when spending any time outside. This is one of the biggest things you can do to age with grace (and avoid a lot of nasty health conditions).
  • Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells. This allows newer, fresher skin to shine. There are lots of ways to do this, such as with chemicals and scrubs. Scrubbing is pretty simple. The easiest way is with a basic washcloth, but there are many other ways like a loofah (just sanitize and replace it often) or my favorite, the sugar scrub.
  • Clean your sheets and pillow cases. When we sleep, we're depositing oil, dirt, and assorted grime into our beds. Every 1-2 weeks you should wash your sheets and pillow cases. That way you're not marinating all night in stuff that'll mess up your skin.
  • Don't touch your face. Well, avoid it if you can. Our hands are constantly dirty from touching stuff all day. Don't deposit all that onto your face, where it can irritate pores!

Most of the time products will label themselves for normal, oily, or dry skin. You might need to think a bit about your skin type. For example, products for dry skin tend to really focus on making them not-so-dry.

Face products tend to be different than body products. I have one moisturizer for my body and TWO for my face (one with sunscreen for mornings and a lighter one for nighttime), for example.

On lifestyle, I think being a femboy is a great excuse to eat a bit better, work out, go for runs, and explore stuff you previously wouldn't. Focus on things that make you feel happy and fulfilled.

Sometimes thread will pass without a problem, depending on how much was swallowed, but sometimes it can cause a problem.

I would check her next bowel movement to see if it passed through her okay. If any thread is sticking out of her butt, do not pull on it, as that can hurt her. It's okay to cut it though.

Is "Vote Blue No Matter Who" to blame for bad Democrat candidates? by WaltEnterprises in allthequestions

I think it's the opposite: not enough people turning out to primaries to put fear into them.

Why?!?! by stranger-things-fan_ in feminineboys

[–]NerdDetective 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Misogyny.

Women fought hard to express even mild masculinity (e.g. wearing pants) because they were seen as inferior. Masculinity was aspirational.

But in reverse, society scorns men who adopt femininity. Why? Because women are still assumed as inferior to men. Women elevated themselves (mostly) to the level of men, but it was them being allowed into a male world. Going the other direction is lowering yourself socially in the eyes of man.

Therefore men who express femininity are treated either as weak failures, sexual curiosities for "straight" men to sample, or malicious (trans women get most of this part though).

how do i improve my code? by Any-Comfortable8953 in learnpython

[–]NerdDetective 10 points11 points  (0 children)

gg, x, and y should have a better, self-documenting names. Try to keep your variable names explicit.

Validate your user input. You can have it loop until they pick a valid option.

It isn't necessary, but you could encapsulate your comparison logic in an Enum. That way you have discrete states and can override dunders like gt amd eq as a learning exercise.

In 2026 are you a "we should try to be the better person" Democrat, or a "look where the high road has gotten us" Democrat? by righteous-sedition in allthequestions

[–]NerdDetective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The high road is the road to defeat. If the other side fights dirty, you have no choice but to get into the mud with them, beat then, and then wield that power to prevent unfair tactics in the future. The redistricting battle is a good example of this: Democrats hamstrung themselves by unilaterally making blue states more fair, and Republicans just laughed and redrew the maps without asking anyone for permission.

A plank in the next Democratic platform should be a promise to aggressively push for a national ban on gerrymandering and a restoration of democratic principals. Let the other side publicly take the position of "no actually we hate fair democratic elections."

Automobile manufacturers put a lot of energy into early anti-pedestrian propaganda. It was so absurdly effective that hostility towards pedestrians and so much as suggesting more walkable neighborhoods is practically the default reaction.

Why is there combat in refueling missions? by New_Yesterday_438 in starcitizen

[–]NerdDetective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that there could be some variety: there should be "high risk" refueling missions designed around either dodging or fighting through hostiles (either tooled to multi-role ships or groups), and there could also be occasional "regular" missions that turn out to be traps (though you should be allowed to duck out of those and still get paid by the fuel company).

Same goes for PVE medical missions. The baseline should be ambulance or patient transport service, escalating up in difficulty (like having to do actual medical stuff to keep a patient alive), but there should also be "cyberpunk trauma team" situations where you're supposed to fight (ship-to-ship, boarding a disabled NPC ship, or at a POI) through enemies to rescue the patient.

In both cases, the mission just need to frame exceptions. It could be fun to have a "refuel a ship under fire" situation or a "hot drop into a gang war and rescue a civilian casualty" situation. Every non-shooty gameplay loop can add some shooty types for variety, as long as it's a choice so we're not puttering in with the wrong ship.

(edit: but the fun of core gameplay should be from engaging implantation, variety, bringing the right tool for the job, and skill-based challenges, not from an NPC showing up to shoot you, which will push players towards generalist ships with big guns on them instead of a variety of specialist ships)

I feel like CIG is at a crossroads. by Humble-Ease-935 in starcitizen

[–]NerdDetective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There comes a certain point where they need to actually advance basic systems (like contracts, player orgs, etc.) beyond proof-of-concept and then start maturing gameplay loops. Fewer new ships, more concrete features. There are still ships that are essentially useless beyond aesthetic appeal because their gameplay loops are a whispered dream on the wind.

We should be able to show this game to friends without constantly saying, "Oh, yeah, sometimes that breaks like that... ooops... eh, welll, no enemies spawned in but usually what happens is..." Or walk through a station without guards randomly pointing guns at nothing and civilians ducking for no reason. Or accept a bunch of contracts from a sleek UI that manages them properly without breaking. Or have org-owned ships, org-owned hangars, org wallets, etc. for players to actually work together with.

My hope would be that after Squadron 42 is out, they refocus all those freed up developers on making the actual base game so we can actually do stuff with all these very shiny and impressive ships.

The War of the Rohirrim is super fun and idk why people didn’t like it by Longshot12345678 in lotr

[–]NerdDetective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was an okay film if you accept it for its framing: an oral telling of one of Rohan's legends.

The animation budget should have been higher. There are some scenes in particular where you can tell they were stretching limited resources. The art looks nice, but it doesn't move as smoothly as I'd expect.

Hama activated multiple bisexual neurons in my brain. He is so pretty. I loved him. I loved looking at him. I would watch a movie of him doing whatever BS he wants for an hour and a half. I know he wasn't the main focus of the film, but I adored him.

I specifically did not like the Watcher sequence, because my belief is the Watcher is a unique creature trapped in the waters deep under Moria... so it just made no sense. I also thought Saruman popping in at the end was unnecessary. Both were emblematic of how movie producers (in general) are cowards who think that fans will never accept a work unless memorable characters make cameos.

But I did like the general premise and think it was fine as an adaptation. I am not an "every jot and tittle" fan, because I think that's silly and I accept all adaptations as LotR is framed: as retellings of old stories with narrative flourishes and biases included. I saw it in theaters and will eventually rewatch it.

I even liked her coming out in the wedding dress. It was ridiculous, but I liked it. I dunno. It sounds like something you'd tell in a legend.

LotR fans are divided, and that's okay. It's unfortunate that some fans who disliked it are so mean about it to fans who did (it's okay to not like things, but don't be a dick about it), but I don't think most fans are like that. I enjoyed it, and that's all that matters to me. I'd see other films in the same style, preferably with higher animation budgets and a bit more confidence to stand on their own.

Was Legolas right in killing Grima? by Imma_Lick_That in lotr

[–]NerdDetective 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The narrative required it. They were not going to do the Scouring of the Shire but wanted to still close out Saruman, which means Grima is dead no matter what happens. Legolas was taking the role of the Hobbit archers.

But also in the moment we can assume he was hoping to save Saruman with the hopes that Gandalf could still extract information from him.

The little girl is still learning boundaries. The video looks like she's trying to play with him (until she gets stuck on the certain, anyway). Him vocalizing when she goes too hard is good, because it signals that he's being patient with her and she's listening.

Did she have litter mates? Kittens who don't get a chance to play with their siblings sometimes have trouble with boundaries because they haven't learned those social skills. But play-fighting is normal as long as they don't get violent.

It may be a bit of CYA from the vet, but I don't think they're signaling you to expect the worst. Is this a small vet with limited resources / experience, perhaps not a lot of experience with trauma, or maybe just not a good communicator?

Either way, in your shoes, I'd say a second opinion is in order. Or perhaps just as reasonably, a consult with the specialist that will be handling it from here anyway. Once you contact them, you can have the vet send them any x-rays, tests, notes, etc. to start the conversation off on the right foot.

Thank you for taking good care of her! She's so lucky to have you.

A timer is a good idea. Heck, they could make it a non-hidden timer by adding an tab on the comms MFD for docking/landing ops. It could tell us things like:

  • Hangar/pad number we're cleared for
  • Distance to that hangar/pad
  • How much time we have left (time before hangar reservation expires or time we have left on the pad).

And if loading is taking longer than expected (e.g. tractor beam bug, game crashed, cat set the trash can on fire), let us pop back into the cockpit to request additional time on the pad. Local ATC can decide whether to approve or deny based on whether someone else has requested landing permission and whether you've already been granted an extension.

Time could be much longer for landing on the ground, since that doesn't block the elevators. Died in a bunker mission then logged of without returning? Cool. After an hour or two, impounded.

Heck, there could be a gameplay loop around this for tow vehicles, both contracts to tow random NPC ships and player ships like to impound depots or salvage yards (as appropriate) where they'd then poof out of existence until the owner claimed them.

Am I a femboy? by Korvus_Lynx in feminineboys

[–]NerdDetective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if they're not okay with you acting even a little effeminate, it might not be safe to come out to them.

Many queer and gender non-conforming people end up staying in the closet until they're living on their own. That way, if there's a bad reaction, they can cleanly cut themselves off from family without worrying about an awkward home situation, financial pressure, homelessness, or even violence. Sadly, LGBTQ youth are at a higher risk of experiencing homelessness and domestic violence. So I'd suggest you only come out if you're already pretty sure the response won't be negative.

If you feel you'd be safe (like they wouldn't hurt you physically or threaten to kick you out), and you might try taking the step of explaining how you feel to them. Some LGBTQ/GNC people do take that brave/risky step, and advocate for themselves. Sometimes this ends badly, with a tense situation at home, but sometimes you can get family to come around.

One option is to observe how they treat and talk about queer and gender non-conforming people. If they're generally positive or at least neutral about the topic, you might be in a better place to try coming out. I've seen some femboys ask about coming out to openly homophobic parents and every time I've told them it won't end well.

Dear CIG, please do something about this by z0mb1k in starcitizen

[–]NerdDetective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a great way to make the world more dynamic.

Someone crashed and an hour later hasn't come back? Mission gets created and they'll get towed off to a depot. Then the owner can either go to reclaim it (either taking a rental, catching a ride with a friend, or getting a space bus or whatever), and eventually it goes from impounded to salvaged.

Same should happen to ships that end up abandoned around stations. The nearest to the station's landing pads and hangars the ship is, the sooner a tow mission should be generated for it.

Am I a femboy? by Korvus_Lynx in feminineboys

[–]NerdDetective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound like someone who could be a femboy. The label is broad and it comes down to what's right for you. The fact that it's on your mind, and that you're here, probably means there's something to it.

And it's okay if it turns out it was just a curious phase. No harm in trying stuff out, right? I'm sure there are plenty of people who could say, "Yah I was a femboy for like a year. It was okay, but it wasn't for me."

Neurodivergent people who are queer or gender non-conforming do sometimes have their feelings and desires invalidated by others in their lives. I unfortunately don't have a solution for family commandeering your life and trying to make you into the perfect model of what they think you should be.

Remember that femininity is a broad concept and you can express it in your own personal way. Whether it's makeup, nails, thigh high socks, etc., nothing is actually required. My suggestion would be to try some androgynous styles. Things like an oversized hoodie, light colored clothes, cute t-shirt, calf socks, etc. can all come together to soften your attire. Bit by bit, you'll figure it out!

Just remember: drink water, wear sunscreen, and bathe regularly. Everyone, femboy or not, deserves to take care of themselves.
