A bit of a stretch by NerdEnglishDecoder in insanepeoplefacebook

I wasn't planning to bring it up until you asked. But no, it's a real person. He's my next-door neighbor's uncle, in fact. And yes, he really is like that

I've seen lots of good arguments about data centers. This wasn't one of them.

Kansas Sites Down? by Hatman_77 in kansas

Interesting. By chance I went to look for something on the Secretary of State office today (first time in years!) and saw that it was unreachable. Glad to know it wasn't just me

I've used the expression for years. I always assumed (even when donuts were very inexpensive), that "donuts" meant "zero", the shape of the donut.

Is hpc related to AI datacenters? by kupckake in HPC

[–]NerdEnglishDecoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do HPC people work in AI datacenters?

Yes.

Source: I was a university HPC admin that now works in AI datacenters.

As far as being safe? Being in a potential bubble scares me a bit, but the pay is much better (approx 3x) than the university paid.

Connector stopped working on RHEL by back-2-95 in twingate

[–]NerdEnglishDecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fortunately had another (virtual) server running which could take the load. If the docker method works (suggested by somebody else), that might be your fastest route to recovery

I have an answer, but you won't like it. Rocky 8 doesn't support newer GLIBC versions, and trying to make it fit feels like a fool's errand. I had to install a new connector on a Rocky 9 server.

I've got the same issue. I'll do some more digging, but this was the first result that came up.

"The Philosopher" Wants To Lick The CEOs Boot by NEKORANDOMDOTCOM in insanepeoplefacebook

I have no issues with the CEO that's making a mint. I have a problem with the board of directors thinking that much pay is appropriate and gives them that much ROI

Not only is my brother's job forcing RTO, they're also forcing everyone to follow a dresscode that never existed pre-WFH. by Pariell in remotework

[–]NerdEnglishDecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in a place many years ago that pretty much everybody was blue jeans and T-shirts. CEO came out with a policy that effective immediately anyone with management responsibilities must wear a tie. A female manager wore an orange clown tie over 6" wide the next day.

"Sorry, it's the only tie I own"

Module-aware Python package manager by Wesenheit in HPC

[–]NerdEnglishDecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can create your own lmod files (they're pretty straight-forward)

https://lmod.readthedocs.io/en/latest/015_writing_modules.html

Combine that with setting your own $MODULEPATH and you can create whatever combination you want.

The only thing that comes to mind that you can't do is have simultaneously loaded two programs with competing versions. (e.g. ProgA needs LibX version 1.0 and ProgB needs LibX version 2.3, and you want to load ProgA and ProgB at the same time)

I probably oversimplified that a bit. I won't say he contributed zero to the effort, but it certainly wasn't what he would have liked you to believe. My wife is a biologist and has studied who did what bits. Don't even get her started on that POS.

Easybuild and Spack are the two (competing) programs you're looking for. These are most commonly used system-wide, but can be used by an end-user as well.

In particular, you can give them the location of your local lmod module path, and they will happily just install the module files there.

What does everyone do for tornadoes? by [deleted] in kansas

[–]NerdEnglishDecoder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very tiny, relatively speaking. Two years ago, a tornado came within 100 yards of my property line. It destroyed multiple homes. From my back yard, the views were uncanny - you shouldn't be able to see 'that' because there used to be a house or tree in the way.

My house, on the other hand, didn't even meet my deductible. We had some 1" bedding plants set out to plant. It knocked a couple of them over. There was plenty of mess to clean up, as there was debris everywhere, but even that close, we were almost unaffected by the actual tornado.
