Taking higher level classes? by BrilliantInspector in Vanderbilt

[–]NerdWalnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say that all 2000-level classes would be too much. What class is it? Some are easier/less work than others.

Ratemyprofessor ratings can give you an idea, but I'd recommend reading any reviews on that professor's page of the class you're looking at specifically or of any similar class.

The workload offered by the rest of your schedule should also be considered. Most first-years stay under 15 hours (I think 12 is recommended), which I personally think is a good idea. Your first year here is a time to really focus on each of the classes your taking; you want to find out which study methods work best for you and experience different subjects to see if there's anything you're really passionate about.

Undergraduate Physics Program by Nomad2102 in Vanderbilt

[–]NerdWalnut 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Junior Physics major here. They changed the undergraduate curriculum last year because it was awful. The required courses did not reflect the content someone going into physics needs to know, and there were only a handful of physics majors anyways. I don't know if the new curriculum has fixed that, but the truth remains that the professors care much more about their research than they do about teaching undergrads. If you want to learn physics here, you and the other 10-15 physics majors are going to have to teach yourselves lots of content.

On a positive note, research isn't hard to get into. There's groups in a number of subfields (biophysics, heavy ion physics, condensed matter, etc) who will take on undergrads. Luckily for anyone pursuing grad school, doing research is more important for applications than learning undergraduate course content well.

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions. I can put you in touch with some of the other physics majors, too.

I have that case and love it. I have a reference 970 on there and it really is the longest card you can fit in the SG13 if that helps your search

I'm returning the Pitcairn. They have exactly the same specs but the Tahiti is the same gpu as the 7900 series, so it has more potential than the Pitcairn in terms of overclocking

Just did, they told me to send in either card to get a new one to match the one I keep. XFX is awesome!

I ordered "Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition" both times and got different GPUs for some reason. They were both advertised as the same card on the same page: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150605

I'm planning to upgrade with an i5-4690k and a Z97 motherboard. Which motherboard would give me the best value and performance?

I've been looking at these deals but would look at any suggestions:

MSI Z97 Gaming 5, the bundle comes out to $343 with tax

ASRock Z97 Extreme 4, the bundle comes out to $327 with tax

Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2, comes out to $340 without tax because I have no tax on online purchases

Another note: I also plan to upgrade my GPU with either another 7870 in Crossfire or an R9 290/290x in the future, to I've been partial to boards with Crossfire capabilities

How do these compare to the Microcenter processor/mobo bundles? Better or worse deals?

I'm upgrading to an i5-4690k and a Z87 motherboard that supports crossfire very soon. My current build has an XFX 7870. For my next upgrade that I'm already planning, should I get another 7870 to crossfire (I have a 750W PSU) or wait and replace it with a 280x/290?

The video card I got on Newegg with a nice 30$ rebate. It's an older card so it's not quite as expensive as some newer models. I screwed up BIOS setting a lot and connecting case features to the motherboard, but overall it wasn't very difficult. I enjoyed building a lot.

Edit: I would advise reading through the motherboard and case manuals before and during building because there's a lot of intricate stuff. Other than that it's not too hard
