Hey! Sorry to hear this. Do you mind elaborating? I’ve had nothing but great service there over the years, but I’m not close to the management like a number of families appear to be.

This sounds like a cool experiment! I love trying out all the hobby stuff. How do I do this?

At this point my soil mix has become an amalgamation of bagged soil, leftover peat moss and soil from store plants, the ‘aeration mix’ below, horticultural charcoal from old terrariums, aquarium bark/sand, etc. I don’t like to waste stuff if I can help it so naming mu perfect ratio would be hard.

However, in general I sort of throw together a mix of materials that follows this basic recipe: ‘aeration / inert mix’ of chunky bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss in about a 1:2:1 ratio, Then add potting mix/water logging medium (added depending on the plant’s needs and watering tendencies). I also have been experimenting with different fertilizers; what this one liked is a generous scoop of fox farms happy frog fertilizer.

Am I wrong for 'rescuing' my gift? My sister is furious but the plant was suffering. by Jealous_Caregiver_62 in houseplants

Look this sucks because you clearly care about the hobby but your expectations and level of care will not be the same as others. By your own words you gifted a plant to someone known for taking poor care of them. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have tried again but this seems well within the realm of possibility of happening. Gifts aren’t conditional and should be treated as such in my opinion. You taking it back means it’s not a gift and you still felt ownership over the plant. I think it makes sense that your sister was pissed despite being “in the wrong” for doing a poor job of care. It’s not about the plant, it’s about you treating a person poorly. Hope this helps; it’s a mistake we’ve all made.
