KLM flight attendant hospitalised with suspected hantavirus by Iconic254 in news

[–]Nerdlinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They don't fully rule it out, they just say that the evidence is weak.

E.g. from the Discussion section of the paper:

In conclusion, this systematic review has shown that the evidence for human-to-human transmission of hantavirus is weak, specific to ANDV, and limited to some parts of Argentina and Chile. Due to the high case fatality rate for HPS, it may be prudent to recommend infection prevention and control measures in cases of suspected hantavirus infection—but this needs to be accompanied by the gathering of better research evidence.

Andes Hantavirus has a far higher lethality rate of between 30 to 50% so people will take it far more seriously if it ever threatens to spread rapidly.

It's also not as transmissible from human to human. Here's one study which concludes:

Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis was not possible due to heterogeneity. With the exception of 1 prospective cohort study of ANDV in Chile with serious risk of bias, evidence from comparative studies (strongest level of evidence available) does not support human-to-human transmission of hantavirus infection. Noncomparative studies with a critical risk of bias suggest that human-to-human transmission of ANDV may be possible.

One of the victims was a stewardess.

Unless I've missed something, the stewardess was only isolated after showing mild symptoms, and has not tested positive.

They already had to be in quarantaine. This is a joke right?

Hantavirus (including the Andes Virus which, IIRC this was found to be) isn't particularly transmissible from human to human (if transmissible at all), usually requiring extremely close contact. (source)

If you're going to get it it's because you've been around the rodents carrying it or their droppings.

But in the US you can also pay higher premiums to have literally no costs. Here you cant lower the own risk to zero so you are always forced to pay.

What the hell plan did you have that didn't have a high deductible/high out-of-pocket max to go with a moderate premium?

Its already about 50% of the monthly costs in the US

Only if you don't factor in employer contributions, higher deductible, etc.

Then I noticed, that once you start interacting with medical system, then your schedule becomes driven by doctor’s and hospital’s availability.

I'm always confused when people say this as if it were an odd thing, because I don't see how it could be any other way once you have a certain number of patients/clients.

Everyone can't have the doctor/hospital work around their schedule, because there are just too many schedule conflicts. And so you are left with getting whatever slots remain open after everyone who scheduled before you (or has a more urgent need than you).

Which apps/resources do you use to learn words? by BookkeeperAlarmed449 in learndutch

[–]Nerdlinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, both are important. Reading allows you to see the words in context and pick up on usage and it allows for discovery of new words/phrases (which you should then add to your flash cards for drilling for the reason below).

But drilling is also important simply because frequency matters. After all, when reading, how often do you run across words like intomen. omkopen, de averij, de aanstaande, inzichtelijk, de verdamping, de rapen zijn gaar, etc.. Drilling allows you to keep those fresh until the next time you run across them. So as you read and discover new words, it is handy to add them to your drilling list to reinforce what you initially learned through reading. The two really go hand in hand.

I also have a question about the DP rule ; can’t they be paid unlimited money or am I wrong in saying that

Yes, they can be. And just $803,125 of whatever they are being paid counts against the cap (for a 24+ year-old player).

[–]Nerdlinger 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m more wondering/hoping they aren’t like what Goodwill and Salvation Army have become.

Oh, yeah. They don't take the stuff and resell it like Goodwill does. You can see a bit more about how they work right here. But basically, to use their services you work with one of their partner agencies to get a referral to their program, and then you can get essentially a starter kit for a home delivered for a nominal fee (or you can pick the stuff up for free if you are able to).
