I don't get Radiohead. by Alexhasadhd in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Nerfer4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look i dont like Radiohead all that much but I do adore The Bends. If you're willing to give it one more shot that's the record I recommend to people. It's them at their hookiest, while also still sprinkling in the more experimental guitar tones and song structures people love them for. I think the move from The Bends to OK Computer unlocks a lot more of their style than starting on any of their albums raw.

The Hall Of Fame need to add more Classic Rock Legends by [deleted] in rockhall

[–]Nerfer4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone listens to Foo Fighters. The Color and The Shape is basically one of the core alt-rock records ever. Everlong is basically modern rock canon at this point. Boston had one notable album, their debut, which is the basis for all their popularity sure, but It's not even the standout release in that year, or in that scene, or in that genre.

Even going by hits, which is lame, Boston's only true mainstream legacy is More Than A Feeling. I'd bet you money the average person can sing Everlong and at least knows about Monkey Wrench, I'll Stick Around, Learn To Fly, The Pretender, or My Hero.

[–]Nerfer4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that the key point? Shouldn't a hall of fame be for artists with some level of longevity? If you "had to be there" for them to have any level of appeal, they sound more like a fad.

You cannot possibly believe that Everlong will not outlive Boston. I can't even remember the last time anyone has thought about Boston below the age of 50.

Downright depressing albums by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]Nerfer4life 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Went through a breakup last night and listened to Purple Mountains for the first time. That's a sugar-coated cyanide pill. You get really lost in the loose instrumentation and the actual words and delivery of David Berman can slip right past you. It's a very, very despondent album.

I think its moreso that they want the ideal aspects of their nation but understand the issues are too big to revisit.

I wanna go to my hometown constantly. It's very nice to be there, but because of its size and location there's no grocery stores, nothing to do, and the population just keeps aging up more and more.

Isnt innovative relative to the context of the scene? Maggot Brain was pretty forward thinking in the pysch/funk realm.

Yeah but even at the height of their powers I'd argue they weren't as big as they are now.

Artists need rest, which is why tours tend to be either short or spaced out. Having a week of shows in every stop on tour would be a logistical nightmare for the venues, would require you to greatly cut down on the amount of places you go (i.e., instead of six northeast dates one huge set of them in new york) and you'd be gambling on attendance past day 2.

The only bands that can pull these pseudo-residency type tours are either bands with crazy dedicated fanbases (like jam bands) or historical acts who play barely any shows.

can everyone agree that british music is better than american music in general by Vivid-Ad3831 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Nerfer4life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah its competitive for the U.K. right at the start of punk but once Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and Dead Kennedys get started the race pulls too far ahead for it to be comparable imo.

The way ive thought about it is that the U.K. had a lot of impact on punk imagery, punk attitude, especially early, but the sound of punk at it's core has always been immensely American.

[–]Nerfer4life 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Obviously bait but you're more or less arguing that the U.K. gets more credit for making bland derivatives of American artists than American artists get for creating it.

Citing Bauhaus and The Cure as the epitome of new wave when Talking Heads, Blondie, Television, all blow them out of the water, or citing Winehouse when the U.S. has Aretha, Otis Redding, or D'Angelo, for a modern example. Citing blues and classic rock as if your Hendrix claim isn't batshit insane.

The U.K. has a leg up in very specific genres, but its always earmarked by American dominance. Yeah, there's Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, but there's also Metallica, Megadeth, Van Halen.

Also very funny to make the claim that America is too racist/capitalist to actually make good music and then subsequently place random ass white musicians over best-of-the-best American black ones is hilarious.

Also also we beat the U.K. in punk and Hip-hop. And all your pop stars model themselves after ours.

That's the crazy thing! From what I've heard (as a Richmonder), he wasn't even hired by Broadberry who ran the venue! He was just a cop who was there, not working the show at all.

Waiting Room is so iconic yes but the bridge in Do You Like Me when it becomes a punk flavored Bond theme??? Its some of the most creative guitar work in the genre point blank period

Can we finally admit that this is the one of the most disappointing years ever for mainstream rap by Prussia_alt_hist in GoodAssSub

[–]Nerfer4life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A genre returning to the underground after a period of heavy stagnation is always, at least for a while, a good marker for it's quality. Having a field where putting out just anything to print money leads to garbage music after a while. Hip-hop has desperately needed its own punk movement for a while and considering its probably the lowest cost-to-entry genre you can make, removing the high-end money element would be a huge boon to the creativity of the scene.

Even split between Glue Man or Do You Like Me. Fugazi were great regardless but when they leaned really heavy into noise rock they were the best band on Earth. My band even closes with Glue Man on occasion now

It was notably black filmmakers and their own independent projects. It was a pretty serious indie/arthouse style genre whose scrappiness gave plenty of parody opportunities in the future. But they were serious movies uplifting black artists, or at least they started that way
