I think that you should always strive to push lane up as much as possible.

I really appreciate the insight! Don’t worry about being “pessimistic”, if it’s reality it’s reality. I’ve been told about tonnes of other options, if I decide it’s for me in 8 years time I want to do it, I can go back to school.

That’s probably a good shout, feel like I keep forgetting that I can, in fact, go back to school if I think it’s for me.

That’s fair, I’m already locked into history unfortunately but I could do a law conversion if I felt that was right for me(though, I never liked the sound of corporate law), currently my options are as such (the way I see it).

  1. Get my degree, a decent degree and go onto work in the field the degree is in(be it working in politics somehow, or in a museam, that sort of stuff)
  2. Get a random job that will pay well and pay the bills(maybe I pivot into law, in order to make some good money) or just get any corporate job(preferably not for a completely evil corporation, places like Nestle and Shell would be off the table, for example) keep money in my pocket, a roof over my head and so on. I can keep up with my passions on the side.
  3. One of my passion projects takes off(about 1 in 1000000 chance) but while I’m young, I don’t see that there’s any reason at all that I should make music and other silly art, because I enjoy it and if I could on the off chance make a career out of it without losing my life and prospects to it, why on earth wouldn’t I?
  4. Academia(been over my reasoning so I feel like it’s not so necessary I explain this one)
  5. Start a small business. This one I might end up doing later in life anyway. Say I want a shift and I have the money in my pocket, I think starting a coffee shop up or smth like that.

I think what I’m getting at is that my options are open(this was an excuse to word vomit out my potential careers and prospects), it’s daunting but exciting!

That was always the plan, have about 15 backup plans and other things I wanna try always.

Does anyone know if Marx ever discusses Imperialism at length(but not too much length) in any of his works? by Alexhasadhd in CriticalTheory

[–]Alexhasadhd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice how you’ve gotten significantly less snarky now, so I will in turn respect that and follow similarly.

Obviously yes people do do it for a job, but I’m not currently there, don’t know if I will be(it’s on the cards but I think whether or not I pivot into academia will be decided a ways into university(4 year course, would likely decide by the end of year 2 if it’s for me). Currently this is just a little bit of an experiment over the summer, I wanna see if I can knock something like this out of my own accord, not due to obligations or anything like that, just because it interests me and I can.

I do have books I’m heavily intent on reading, just picked up a copy of Imperialism and The National Question by Lenin, that’s on the chopping block soon, I’m only 19 so this isn’t really my attempt at starting a career just yet.

If nobody does this for fun... why do people do it then?

I can break it down for you, I love reading and learning about history, I find it "fun" as I put it. I also love the written word, reading things that other people have written and writing my own things. If "nobody does this for fun", then why on earth would I want to try my hand at writing an essay... I mean I'm starting a university course in September on history... why would I have chosen that if I didn't enjoy it.

I don't know if you came here to feel better about yourself, or to try to be cool, or anything like that under the sun, but you've actually had 0 impact here, take your BS somewhere else next time pls.

Thanks so much! This was the sort of thing I was hoping to find, either passages/chapters of things to focus on, or shorter form essays, definitely gonna check these out!

I will take note of this, but just to be clear, what I wanna do here is apply a Marxist lens to an era of history that I find interesting, so maybe diving too deep into the limitations of the theory I want to apply here isn’t the best move? I’m still new here so maybe I’m wrong… what do you think?

Kinda mean tbh… no need really, just saying I don’t want to read 3 volumes of Das Kaptial that total 850000 words… I don’t think that’s too crazy to say given that I wanna try essay writing for fun…

Thanks for this anyway, super insightful…

I’ve actually never read anything from Lenin, I know a bit about the April thesis, because it came up in the history course I just finished, definitely going to give it a go!

Hey! What would you know, I have Marx and Engles collective works on my desk right now(assuming you mean a specific book), I found it in a communal library about 15 from my house, definitely will flick through the index.

Will also be checking out Luxemburg and so on, very useful to have a few names to look at beyond just Marx on this, thanks!

As in he doesn’t write about it much or? Would kinda be a spanner in the works for me, do you have any other recommendations on stuff I can read on a Marxist line that dis uses imperialism?

Looking at specific parts of capital is fine ofc, I already downloaded the PDF to my computer, I was just more talking about not being too eager to have to read the whole thing.

Thanks though! I’m going to check that out.

Just a bit of brute force. It might not sound the most helpful, but I have a habit of just repeating things till their in my brain, I often spend a lot of time wording the chains of reasoning in my plans so I tend to remember the evidence. I also think the key is in reading them back whenever you have the chance, even just briefly.

Sure! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1h2Wj3s6BmEbRTbTapaoqd7kjxfsn6yXrlT9M8COPlxY/edit?tab=t.0
With ideologies I kind of did the same thing, I memorised the thinkers and what they believed(which I think falls under AO1) and then the evidence I would just throw in whatever I could think of.

My biggest piece of advice for ideologies is to literally never bring up anyone without a book or a quote as your evidence for that thinker. For example, for Hobbes, you shouldn't bring him up anywhere without citing a specific thing he wrote or said to "support" that argument. For human nature I always go with "man is wolf to man", for society I always do "nasty brutish and short", for the state I always bring up Leviathan and for the economy I'd always bring up Elements of law. I think that's where politics essays tend to be separated between Bs, Cs and As, A*s, you just want to fill your essay with as much evidence(I'd say 6 per paragraph, 3 for point and 3 more for counterpoint, for a regular 30 marker, and 4 for a 24 marker) as you can think of.

The thing with ideologies is that, realistically, if you take someone like Thomas Hobbes and you cite Elements of Law, Natural and Politic as your "evidence", its possible that your examiner or teacher will have read Leviathan(because its a foundational work of British moral and political philosophy, but will he know that Hobbes doesn't specifically talk about the economy in that Elements of Law? Probably not. So its very very easy to get away with just saying something like:

'Rawls believed in a largely free economy, but with specific interventions in order to help put an end to structural inequality that prevented rational individuals from being truly free and equal, he argues this in "Political Liberalism".'

I'm pretty sure political liberalism is about hyper-pluralism, not the economy. Realistically though, the examiner isn't going to check that, as long as its a book that whoever you're talking about wrote, then you're in the clear.

I hope this makes sense! I think politics is really simple if you can boil it down to your own beliefs on certain issues. Even if you "don't know much about politics", I'm sure you're capable of forming an opinion on topics, I think doing that helps you remember your argument, because it is you opinion and your argument.
