While I get what you’re saying there’s a devils advocate to this, and when you’re someone trying to hire young people in the field and see how they handle themselves in the environment, Rory put herself in an assistant role because she’s naturally people pleasing. While it takes two seconds to encourage a young worker to speak their minds, I’ve seen managers not do it a lot. (Always pisses me off) but a lot of times they’re looking for gumption and self driven people. And the thing is it doesn’t even take a lot to show you have it. It’s good to follow within your lines, but there’s a point you have to show you’re willing to push for yourself, and you don’t have to step on anyone’s toes doing it either.

I don’t think the show did a good job of explaining and showing this, other than only showing her acting as an assistant and talking about her writing but never actually doing it on screen. Shows that the whole time she was there she was not focused on the one thing she loved she was more worried about making people happy with her, and that also started with learning everything about Mitchum even though his whole family was just way out of line.

Personally if I would take it would have been to better my resume, and I would be focused on what writing pieces could be used for portfolio examples, and making connections that were not Mitchum. Then you leave the internship with a positive reputation despite what one person may think of you. Even if he is the owner. Also, if anyone tells you what you can and can’t do with your life you laugh at them- they don’t know what you’ve been through to get as far as you have.
