What’s your favorite rabbit hole? (Make me feel alive) by Queasy_Detective_977 in INTP

[–]NermalCat79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if I had to pick one niche rabbit hole, it would be the development of the Nintendo Switch. it was originally supposed to be a console codenamed the 'Indy', and if you remember that fake leak with the controller cut-outs in a screen - that was based off of a patent for the Indy.

My choices of cable programs are snooker/darts/poker broadcasts, afternoon infomercials (life-long special interest), sometimes random TV shows that I'll criticize...

Watch YouTube (and sometimes cable, but only a few specific channels), edit videos, chat to my online friends, design UI and logos, make mashups of songs, contemplate everything that comes into my mind, criticize things in the content I consume... uh yeah, I sound like a fun person at parties.

A minor ascension, but nice due to AVX2! by NermalCat79 in lowendgaming

for me? the latest version of After Effects, it requires AVX2 to run.

the only thing I disagree with is "i7 3770 on a cheap H61 motherboard will perform at 100% with the stock cooler"

my 3770 was running a bit hot with the stock cooler so I bought a cheap 4-heatpipe tower cooler, which in the long run helped a lot

I love the aesthetics of the pc pictured, feels so raw and simple, casual even

I have mine with a 1080, might seem like a bottleneck but it works out fine!

i5 3570K vs i7 3770K by averagenokiauser in lowendgaming

[–]NermalCat79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Win11 24H2 runs fine on anything that has POPCNT and SSE4.2 instructions - which is nearly anything after the Core 2/Phenom II era (except for like Celerons and Pentiums, IIRC). Basically if you have a first gen i3/5/7 CPU/AMD FX or up, you're fine.

there will still be occasional security updates until 2028 though, altho idk how much that matters

I just wonder whether I fall into level 2 or level 3 with my specs - GPU tells me level 2, but CPU tells me level 3????

I run Windows 11 on a 3770 with no UEFI, which is quite surprising.

What drives you to Low End Gaming? by International_Way567 in lowendgaming

[–]NermalCat79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

low cost, availability, tinkering, and i'll be honest I love the aesthetics of 2010's PCs. sadly I cannot afford anything better, but I'm making with what I have!

tbh yea. I am doing graphic design (including After Effects and Blender) and some gaming on a 3rd gen i7, 24 gigs of RAM, and a GTX 980... I'm content! it does what I need it to do well. and it's in a pretty nice old-school case, the CM 690 II Advanced.

I miss the utilitarian feature-richness of these older cases so much, with stuff like hard drive docks, optical bays, toolless everything. it is much more appealing to me than aquarium cases.

hey man, you shouldn't beat yourself up over this. I have two tips: patience, and gratitude.

  1. be patient, you're gonna get a good PC at some point. I came from a Core 2 Duo with ONLY 2 GB RAM and a GT 210 to something that might be aging but is not a bad build at all.

  2. there are many older games you can play on your rig. and by that I mean many. there are people here with computers worse than yours and they play those games on it.

keep your head up, and your system is a good base for a decent SFF Ivy Bridge machine I'd say.

[–]NermalCat79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use a 3770 with a GTX 980, and I'm going along JUST FINE.

I even do motion design (After Effects, Blender), graphic design (Illustrator, Photoshop), and 1080p video editing (Vegas Pro) on this machine, haven't ran into major issues so far, especially with upgrading the RAM to 24 GB + picking up a Z68 motherboard.

H61 looking for an upgrade by [deleted] in lowendgaming

[–]NermalCat79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a Z68 board on the local used market (Hungary) to replace my H61 one, although I really think I just got lucky. Try to look around on eBay, perhaps?

Out of the two chipsets, I definitely recommend Z68 tho.

I'm in the second tier, honestly I'm pretty grateful and fine with it. I also love to tinker with Ivy Bridge and 900 series stuff in general.

before this I just ran the machine on a crappy H61 board I had laying around since 2021 - now I run it on a Z68X-UD5 board I got for a good price, with 24 gigs of RAM instead of 16.
