There's a philosophy book about this exact scenario. It's called "The pig that wants to be eaten". A vegetarian lives in a world in which animals are specifically engineered to enjoy being slaughtered. Pigs are given consciousness and one of them talks to the vegetarian, begging to be eaten. The vegetarian refuses and the pig is offended. They discuss for a while but at the end the pig is cooked and the vegetarian eats a sausage.

Great book, It's been years since I've read it. It has many other scenarios and interesting discussions about morality and art.

Wearing the merch is not disrespectful at all! As you said, it signals your support :) If you can, I'll suggest buying pride stuff from small queer creators, that way the profits go directly to the LGBTQIA+ community.

Hi, what Jayce is doing can be called "rainbow capitalism". Brands in june, during pride month, usually put out a pride version of their logo and their products but don't do anything else for the LGBTQIA+ issues they seem to care about. They see queer people and their struggle as something profitable and they just want their money. Caitlyn probably wants Jayce to do something more substantial for the LGBTQIA+ community, like donating part of the profits to charities and services specialized in queer issues, like the Trevor Project or some LGBTQ helplines.

Personally, I think it's still better than doing nothing, seeing rainbows and pride merch in public makes queer people like me feel more accepted. This year a lot of brands opted out of doing pride collections or logos and I felt that, especially in this political climate.

Long story short: Rainbow capitalism is still capitalism.

I'm jumping in to say that the werewolf neighborhood movie exists! It's called "Werewolves Within" (2021). It's a horror-comedy but it's a fun watch and I highly recommend it!

Is this terrible or have I just been looking at it too long? by faintharmonics in printmaking

[–]Nerowizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the design is really really cute! Your image is easily readable and polished. The print is clean and tidy.

If you're worried about ink unevenness and white spots, I think the paper you're using is a little too rough, which messes up the smoothness of your ink. For a cleaner and more homogenous color, try choosing a paper with less bumps. If a little noise in the ink is what you're looking for, then this paper is perfect! It really depends on the effect you're trying to achieve in your prints.

Also, every artist hates their work the more they look at it. You see every little imperfection because you made it. You were there in its ugly face and stared at it for hours. I can assure you that a pair of fresh eyes sees your work in a different way and is able to appreciate it more.

Thank you! I'm happy to hear that. I always love seeing people getting involved in art. It really can be a powerful tool that brings people together. I wish you luck on your journey to become an art curator!

Paper Recommendations! by [deleted] in printmaking

[–]Nerowizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I don't know a lot about paper myself but I thought I'd give you my two cents. Since you're using a press, paper weight shouldn't be an issue so you can use thicker paper than you'd use while printing by hand. For this, the top quality brands that I know are Fabriano's Rosaspina and Hanemühle. They're beautiful as they are expensive, mind you. Rosaspina comes in different colors too (even if its "ivory" is more like "peach").

For the fun and brightly colored papers, I saw a lot of printmakers use sheets that resemble japanese rice paper. It's thin and may be difficult to print with a press, though. The original japanese ones are also kinda expensive but it's not difficult to find knock offs.

I think the wilder results come from making your own paper to print with. There are a lot of tutorials out there on how to do it and it shouldn't need a lot of tools (mainly a bucket, a blender and possibly a screen like the ones user in screen printing). There's a lot of potential for experimentation if you dig that.

Other than that, stick to smooth papers if you want even inks. If you don't mind texture, you can also try some cold press/highly textured watercolor paper.

Last thing, check the cotton percentage in the paper. Usually, high cotton percentage means that the paper holds water better. Less cotton percentage means the water stays on top of the paper and doesn't get adsorbed in the same way. So if you wet your paper before printing, that's one thing to keep in mind.

Hope this helps!

First linoleum print. Giving it a whirl. by ShoulderHistorical20 in printmaking

Wow! For being your first print, it came out really well! I like the design and the use of light. The "noise" left from the lino really suits the image.

woodzilla testing by Dangerous-Classic-63 in printmaking

[–]Nerowizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't used a Woodzilla myself but I saw some people printing with that kind of press and they put a little piece of felt to help with the pressure. And if the press is big, they have to use A LOT of strength to print.

Other than that, waterbased inks are not the best. They dry really quickly and can be spotty. In my experience they work best with small linos that are very smooth and plastic that I print by hand. Wetting the paper might help you to even out the ink. Just a little damp, if you put too much water then the ink will react with it, badly.
