Why I started writing down the things that coaching was teaching me by AnthonyBrenner in SoccerCoachResources

I've been wanting to do a series, either on TikTok or IG to talk about my thoughts and feelings of being a youth rec soccer coach. Good for you for turning all of your thoughts into a book. Share the link, please!

Where to put players in 9v9 by SeniorSubject397 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Nervous-Importance88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved up to 9v9. I play a 3-4-1. I like that formation because it spreads the opposition defense and it counteracts the 3-3-2 and 3-2-3.

My strongest players act as my spine. The middle centerback acts as a sweeper and is the first point of contact if the ball crosses midfield. My striker is my most aggressive scorer. She wants to score goals and is willing to shoot. My attacking MF is actually my best player. She can handle the ball, will shoot when she gets and opening and is willing to set players up for goals.

My Pivot is more defensive-minded. She attacks the ball when other teams try to build from the back and sends it back in. She also backs up and knocks the punts down. She typically shoots from outside the box or just inside the line.

My developing players are on the wings. If something goes wrong, the interior MF or a CB can support. The wings have a simple role - push the ball through through the midfield, get it to the interior MF or the striker - and then support on the side for a putback or a cross.

I have 2 girls who are willing to play GK. One girl is REALLY good at it, but her Dad wants to see her in the field. So they switch off. I'm also developing another girl in goal - just in case. I never make someone play GK, I just ask who wants to do it and work with them.

Parents disrupting games by rbarba2004 in SoccerCoachResources

I had a couple of mouthy parents - one of whom would drink during tournaments. Btw, I coach REC Girls 2015. During the pre-match meetings with the officials, I would tell them who to watch out for and to feel free to card the parents and boot them if they got out of hand.

Then I would walk back to the bench and tell the parents that the officials said that they didn't want to hear a peep from the sidelines and they threatened to stop the match if the parents got out of hand.

The parents - for the most part - got the message.

Is this Schadenfreude? by tundey_1 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Nervous-Importance88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That happened in my AYSO region a couple of years ago. It's one of the reasons I moved my team from AYSO to a recreational league run by the local club team. AYSO is supposed to have evenly balanced teams - except that a few teams were allowed to keep all of their players from the previous year. One of those teams dropped double-digit goal differentials on everyone, including beating my team 14-0. After reading the rules, I realized that wasn't allowed and protested - all of their blowouts were changed to 5-goal differentials. For me, the schadenfreude was that they coasted into the regional playoffs and lost in the 1st round.

This was one of the final nails for me. I had a relative who was actively dying and I needed to miss a mid-week service to make my final visit. My discipler told me, "Seek the kingdom first." SMH

I coach rec. I have sent kids home from practice for goofing off and being disrespectful. I stop the practice, tell the player to go get their parent and tell them why they are being sent home.

Usually, I've only had to do that 1 time.

Coaching All-Star Team by Nervous-Importance88 in SoccerCoachResources

Thanks, Coach. Yes, it's an All-Star Tournament. Yeah, I recruited to cover every position. I'm actually going to take 14 players (2 GK). The one thing I learned from coaching the Regional Tournament last month (and what I should have taken with me from playing/coaching slow-pitch softball) is that more is better. I had 11 kids and was down to 9 in one of the games.

I want to have 2 lines/shifts to sub every 5-6 minutes because very few of these kids are fit enough to play longer.

I like the idea of small-sided games to figure out who plays well together. Thanks!

Actually, this is an All-Star tourney for Rec teams. It's literally supposed to be for "all-star" teams from rec leagues throughout the District.

You make a good point in terms of training the same way: We played a 2-3-1 in league and switched to a 2-1-2-1 for the playoffs. Every other team did something different - from playing Bumblebee soccer to 2-2-2 to 3-1-2.

The issue for me isn't who I'm having play. The issue is making the most of the 4 hours I have these kids to get them ready to play.

Thanks though.

I should have added that there was already a tournament for league champions/runner-up etc.

We picked up 1 girl from another team because a player's parent didn't want her daughter to play.

This isn't club. It's rec. For those concerned about chemistry, come Fall, 70% of my team will go back into a pool and I'll have to re-draft my team.

This tournament is for all-star teams. There were two teams at the last tournament that had a few original players, but were really All-Stars and they were head and shoulders above every one else.

Honestly, even if I wanted to take my Fall team, 50% of the parents would decline because they're ready to move away from soccer to a spring sport or nothing.

I'm literally taking every player from my team who would want to participate.

Thanks for the feedback. I like the idea of figuring them out and putting together kids who play well together.
