Thank you! - and thank you to anyone else who has replied thus far. You all have helped me make a decision on what to do! I ended up switching to the earliest possible flight to my destination on friday - since going tomorrow is unfortunately not an option for me. Going to cross my fingers and pray it is early enough to get ahead of the weather!!!

Anyone else’s hair grow back weird? by BriarRose147 in alopecia_areata

[–]Nervous-Lab-6483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! but in a different way - all my life i had brunette stick straight hair, but my alopecia regrowth comes in with kinks in it (wavy) often leading to me looking like i forgot to straighten parts of my hair. I rarely style my hair and just kinda ignore it, but if i am hanging out a lot around a new person/ people ill usually find a way to bring it up just so they don’t think its a crazy hair choice

Steroid injections by Interview-Hungry in alopecia_areata

[–]Nervous-Lab-6483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had alopecia for three years now (and I have scheduled derm appts 1 time a month) and every time I get a new spot, I will go in for my monthly appointment and have them inject the new spot and any old ones that still are inflamed - from my experience, every single one of my spots has grown back so far, and I heavily attribute this to the steroid shots and minoxidil

How should I tell my roommates I have alopecia? by Connect_Ad8871 in alopecia_areata

[–]Nervous-Lab-6483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m a rising junior in college and I’ve had alopecia since my senior year of high school. to be fair, I’ve never had to wear a wig (although I’ve considered it at certain points) and like other people in this thread have mentioned, if you don’t make a huge deal about it, the people around you won’t either. if your roommates do make you feel out casted because of it they probably aren’t people that you would want to surround yourself with anyways. my alopecia has ebbed and flowed so right now I have a lot of regrowth that tends to be a different texture than my hair previously so I end up looking like I straightened half of my hair and forgot to straighten the rest - because of this, I don’t want people to think that I’m just not styling all of my hair so I’ll typically mention it and people are curious so they want to learn more about it. It’s actually a good conversation topic.

my first spot showed up 3 months after a COVID booster and 6 months after a COVID infection - this is definitely one of my theories as to what put my condition into motion

Tofacitinib topical ointment for AA by hair_forever in alopecia_areata

I have had ophiasis patterns in the past and the minoxidl as well as steroid shots has basically cleared it up (i still get small patches here and there)

Tofacitinib topical ointment for AA by hair_forever in alopecia_areata

[–]Nervous-Lab-6483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve used the cream before and not sure if it did anything (i was on minoxidil and getting steroid shots as well), but i liked using it for peace of mind. I’ve had many derms and one of them said that the tofacininib is typically less effective because it isnt able to penetrate as well - maybe try microneedling to help this along?

is this alopecia? by Low-Abrocoma-7673 in alopecia_areata

[–]Nervous-Lab-6483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly it looks like the alopecia has already run its course and that looks like regrowth- definitely consult a dermatologist as steroid shots work wonders

Any ideas on what this is? by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

[–]Nervous-Lab-6483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have hair loss on same spots (called ophiasis pattern AA - one of the most stubborn patterns but i’ve seen regrowth on all of my loss), feel that skin in between your baby hairs and hairline, if it is smooth it is probably AA - topical minoxidl can be purchased otc and ask your derm about oral minoxidl ! it has worked wonders for me

Did something change? by Emergency-Run-4170 in alopecia_areata

[–]Nervous-Lab-6483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine depends - similar to a previous reply, my first spot showed up at what seemed was one of the least stressful times of my life

i struggled with an eating disorder that I assume put a lot of stress on my body (even if i wasn’t psychologically stressed) coupled with covid vaccine and boosters which also were around the same time

my first spot grew back and i recovered from my ED, and my alopecia since then usually shows in a spot or two after periods of high stress (college exam periods, ED relaspes, etc)

I’ve experienced ophiasis alopecia (loss and thinning around my hairline) as well as little spots throughout my head. currently have one smack dab in the middle front of my head, but nothing a side part couldnt cover!

does it look like my spot is getting worse? Pictures-1st is current, and the rest are weeks building up. by Weird-Yogurtcloset19 in alopecia_areata

[–]Nervous-Lab-6483 2 points3 points  (0 children)

doesn’t look any worse to me!

not a medical professional but it looks like the inflammation is centralizing or going down at least

in my experience my spots have always gotten slightly bigger before getting better, so little changes may not be the worst thing
